The Project Design Engineer-I will assist the Town of Blacksburg's Department of Engineering & GIS managers with developing concept plans through construction documents for a wide variety of infrastructure projects including, but not limited to, new sidewalks, stormwater management and drainage improvements, and water main and wastewater sewer extensions and replacements. Plans will be prepared using Civil 3D. Additional responsibilities will include preparing feasibility studies and assisting with inspection of public infrastructure for Town and private development projects. Work will be performed under the general direction of the Director of Engineering & GIS and Senior Town Engineers.

- Under the direction of department managers and as needed, performs inspections of public and private development construction sites, utilities, roadway and related public improvements for compliance with Town specifications and standards including inspections of Town Capital Improvement Program projects
- Prepares cost estimates on engineering projects
- Acts as Assistant Project Manager on various Town Capital Improvement Program projects under the direction of department managers
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as an understanding of the principles and practices of civil engineering related to the preparation of plans and specifications for land development, water, wastewater, drainage and stormwater management
- Prior experience using Civil 3D
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with team members and the public
- Ability to work independently within a collaborative environment
- Ability to prepare technical reports
- Knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods, and techniques
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, employees, contractors, State and Federal officials and the general public
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, or related field, and up to five years of experience working in civil engineering design and construction.
Engineer-In-Training Certification is preferred
Experience with plan preparation using Civil 3D is required
Experience with WaterGEMS and SewerGems is preferred
Ability to obtain Professional Engineer License within two years of hire
Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Reviewer Certification within one year
Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
