Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Engineering Services Department (ES) within Facilities Services provides engineering services to the UNC Chapel Hill campus, a highly complex campus with a large number and variety of buildings and structures. ES provides engineering expertise for all engineering facets for the campus. ES is responsible for project development for all University Engineering led projects including repair, renovation and new construction; management of capital budgets and administration of design contracts associated with these projects. In addition, ES is responsible for development of high functioning campus engineering design standards, design of engineered systems, inspection of all projects implemented within campus buildings, engineering support of Building Services personnel, leads energy management and water conservation efforts, and building commissioning services.

Position Summary

A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $7,500 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:

$3,750 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $3,750 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

The Senior Electrical Engineer represents the University's engineering interests as the primary subject matter expert in all matters related to building electrical systems operated and maintained by the Facilities Services organization. This position serves as the University's steward and advocate for building electrical systems. As the most senior electrical engineer for campus buildings, this position provides expert input to ensure systems are safe, reliable, maintainable, and aligned with University design standards, which also include requirements for design document submissions, system flexibility, system life expectancy, life-cycle costs, and energy efficiency. Responsibilities include reviewing major capital improvement projects at all design phases and supporting construction and warranty efforts. The position will maintain the University's Electrical Design Guidelines, including coordinating with internal stakeholders to represent their interests. The Senior Electrical Engineer provides technical guidance and design oversight for Facilities Engineering's electrical team, which is responsible for in-house design, project management of electrical-led informal projects, and support of maintenance and construction shops. The Senior Electrical Engineer collaborates with engineers and technical staff across Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and across campus, serving as the primary technical expert and advocate for building electrical systems across a complex campus. Candidates should bring deep technical expertise, excellent communication and coordination skills, and a strong commitment to safe, sustainable, and high-performing building systems.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Substantial knowledge of professional engineering theory, techniques, practices, procedures, building codes and laws and skills in applying these for problem-solving, system design, and identification for energy conservation opportunities. Thorough knowledge of state and federal codes, standards, and regulations governing the engineering program. Experience in engineering design and construction practices. Ability to review designs and interpret all related plans and specifications, estimate costs, and technically direct others and review and evaluate their work. Working knowledge of federal, state and local government regulations governing the design and construction of buildings and land development. Ability to cope with the management of multiple projects with established completion dates and budget limitations. Exceptional knowledge of the NC Electrical Code. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of NC at the start of employment. Out of state PE's may apply for a NC PE license after a contingent offer is made through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) process found on the NCBELS.ORG website. A valid NC driver's license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Ability to technically direct others and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Strong interpersonal skills. Good leadership and basic fiscal management skills. Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in engineering project design and management. Knowledge of research and specialty lab facilities, and power quality issues for these types of spaces. Thorough knowledge of university practices, procedures, and processes. Prior experience working with the NC State Construction Office (NCSCO) and NC University System Office (NCSO).
