Under limited supervision performs skilled craft mechanical and operational craftwork at the journeyman level in the operation, maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of water process equipment and components of water treatment plants. Work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, or well-defined policies. Work requires knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, regulations, policies, methods, standards, and procedures governing operation and maintenance of water process equipment. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, where there are some risks and hazards. Solves complex problems within established parameters and identifies and recommends responses to new and unusual circumstances. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions or obtain clarification. Work is reviewed on completion for quality, timeliness, and adherence to methods, standards, and policies. Employees in this class may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.

  • Operates, maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots process equipment.
  • Monitors and inspects equipment to verify proper operation, identify problems and take corrective action where needed.
  • Operates personal computers to input data and statistics for operational and regulatory reports.
  • Utilizes computer programs related to the maintenance, operation and communication functions.
  • Ensures permit conditions are met.
  • Provides plant operational support to the Process Coordinator.
  • Maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots mechanical equipment, such as, but not limited to, gas and diesel engines, heat exchangers, fans, valves, compressors, storage tanks, pumps of various types, overhead cranes and hoists.
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as grinders, lathes, drill presses, pipe threading and welding machines, band saws, electrical testing equipment and other associated shop equipment.
  • Maintains equipment maintenance records and reports.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment.
  • Maintains and inventories tools.
  • Performs minor electrical maintenance functions.
  • Operates and maintains vehicle in accordance with company procedures and policies.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as: ton trucks, boom trucks, tractors, and other vehicles that may require up to a Class A CDL License.
  • Cleans and maintains process equipment.
  • May train and lead the work of others.
  • Performs other work-related tasks as required.

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, and two (2) years journeyman level experience in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of process equipment of the type used in water treatment facilities.

PROMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

All regular employees of JEA who: 1) successfully complete the JEA Water/ Wastewater Operator Maintainer Training Program and 2) are recommended for promotion by the Training/Water/Wastewater Management Oversight Committee will be promoted to this position without examination.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

The following are required at the time of application and must be maintained during employment in this classification:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • A minimum valid Class C Florida Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operators License.

Other physical demands or notes:

JEA employees should not attempt to lift, pull, or push a load in excess of 50 lbs. without assistance. Care should always be taken when lifting, pushing, or pulling in an awkward position, when outdoors or walking in non-paved areas.

Must possess sufficient strength and agility to perform lifting, climbing, and carrying of tools and equipment. Able to wear appropriate safety equipment; work at heights and perform arduous duties.
