Job Description

The Project Engineer supports the Engineering department by providing all aspects of engineering of the HVAC system project design to ensure engineering deliverables meet project, schedule, and technical requirements. The Project Engineer also maintains awareness of the individual component cost, engineering man hours, and scope of work to achieve budget parameters. The Project Engineer's efforts actively support our mission of ensuring reliable, durable, and safe operations for our customers by furnishing the highest quality industrial HVAC systems.

Industrial HVAC Systems and Equipment Project Design

Determines project technical requirements and scope of work by reviewing proposal and job entry information, customer specifications, performance standards, and relevant code requirements for the offshore and onshore oil & gas industry. Identifies questions, missing information, and timely communicates these to the Project Manager for prompt resolution. Proactively identifies potential design issues and presents solutions to the supervisor.

Performs HVAC system design, including verification of heat loads, air flows, conceptual system design, and mechanical layouts.

Selects HVAC system components by performing required system calculations and consulting technical data sheets and conferring with vendors as necessary.

Prepares detailed ductwork designs by establishing routing that is consistent with industry and code requirements. Performs necessary calculations to determine sizing, pressure losses, and noise. Prepares ductwork arrangement drawings in compliance with industry and code standards.

Generates equipment general arrangement and detail design drawings. Performs calculations to determine equipment weights and center of gravity. Utilizes engineering judgment and performs design calculations necessary for sizing structural members.

Develops detailed mechanical drawings identifying all information necessary to procure and manufacture the equipment. Uses judgment and confers with shop personnel to ensure designs and fabrication details incorporate ease of manufacturing.

Determines operation sequence to meet design, code, and customer requirements and establishes the basis for control philosophy.

Works with Electrical Designer to generate detailed electrical drawings for power and control systems in accordance with project and code requirements. Specifies all required electrical components.

Proactively communicates directly with client engineering personnel to resolve ongoing design questions during the design phase. Refers questions related to the scope of work, schedule, or commercial matters to the Project Manager. Maintains routine communication with the Project Manager to ensure communication regarding project status and schedule throughout the engineering phase.

Reviews all drawing submittal packages to ensure accuracy and conformance with client document requirements prior to submittal.

Prepares inquiry packages for technical components and solicits proposals from established vendors.

Responds to questions and revisions occasioned by the client drawing review.

Upon approval of drawing packages, promptly prepares the equipment Bill of Materials and enters into MAS500. Makes recommendations to the Project Manager for sourcing technical components.

Responds to questions from clients and shop personnel through the manufacturing and commissioning phase.

Generates Operating and Maintenance Manual once equipment is commissioned.

Participates in kick-off meetings to ensure clear understanding of project goals and requirements.

Participates in interim and final project technical reviews and evaluates operability, constructability, and serviceability of designs. Reviews final design package to ensure compliance with company, project, and industry requirements.

Ensures timely delivery of project documentation.

Supports sales efforts by providing preliminary design information where necessary.

Coordinates work with outside engineering resources as required.

Identifies opportunities for improvements in product performance, manufacturing cost, product line, and departmental processes, and participates in achieving solutions.

Teamwork

Participates as a member of the engineering team to provide support and technical expertise in the HVAC system and equipment design.

Develops relationships with internal operations and administrative staff to ensure customer satisfaction in order to effectively and efficiently address issues.

Skills/Knowledge Required

Engineering Degree required

Minimum four (4) years of relevant design experience, including design of equipment for hazardous locations.

Detailed knowledge of codes that are applicable to offshore HVAC equipment (including ASHRAE, NFPA, ABS, USCG, IMO, SMACNA). Detailed knowledge of electrical code requirements for domestic and international projects (NEC, IEC, ATEX).

Thorough understanding of the principles of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system design. Ability to analyze load requirements, select and specify system components, and design ductwork systems.

Understanding of refrigeration cycle and ability to perform necessary calculations and equipment selection for both direct expansion and chilled water systems.

Ability to perform calculations associated with HVAC ductwork systems.

Thorough understanding of HVAC control systems. Knowledge of industrial power wiring circuitry and design requirements. Knowledge of industrial controls and designs, including PLCs.

Experience with industrial construction and fabrication, including design of packaged systems. Ability to perform straightforward design calculations for skids.

Ability to develop conceptual mechanical arrangement layouts and detail-level mechanical configurations.

Knowledge of 3D Modeling & CAD required, Inventor and AutoCAD a plus.

Ability to perform and check calculations, specify mechanical equipment, and solve problems of difficult engineering complexity.

Ability to prepare detailed operating manuals.

Requires forward thinking, logical planning, and the ability to work productively in a team environment.

Travel Required: up to 10%

Valid Texas driver's license, clean driving record, and insurance required
