Here's What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like: A stick welder's typical day involves preparing materials, selecting the right electrode, and setting up welding equipment for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). They often work outdoors or in rugged environments such as construction sites, repairing heavy equipment, or structural welding. After inspecting and cleaning the weld area, they strike an arc and apply welds to join metal parts. Throughout the day, they may need to change rods, grind welds, and ensure safety standards are met, all while dealing with smoke, sparks, and varying weather conditions. A TIG welder's day usually starts with reviewing blueprints and material specifications for precision welding tasks. Using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), they work in controlled environments like manufacturing shops or aerospace facilities, often welding thinner materials such as aluminum or stainless steel. They meticulously clean base metals, set up argon gas shielding, and weld using a non-consumable tungsten electrode, sometimes adding filler metal by hand. The job requires high concentration and attention to detail to produce clean, high-quality welds with minimal spatter or defects.
