As a Transportation Engineer Specialist (TES) , you will assist the Transportation Engineer Manager (TEM) with coordinating and leading the Design section. You will be responsible for complex to highly complex highway projects. This position will foster growth and support the team through the five core values of the department: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception
Our most successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of highway design and the processes necessary to develop highway construction plans for letting. These projects include, but are not limited to, system interchanges, urban/rural interstate improvements and expansion, and complex urban/rural projects. These projects typically include complicated staging and traffic control, context-sensitive design, and coordination with various bureaus, districts, and other agencies.
Additional duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Reviewing designs to ensure projects meet design criteria, specifications, and constructability.
- Using advanced software applications and working in a 3D design environment
- Representing the DOT and the Design Bureau at public meetings and project management team meetings
- Serving on various design committees and having a role in updating the Design Bureau's policy and procedures
- Training other staff members in CADD, proper design methodology, design processes, and other areas as needed.
Special Requirements:
Possess and maintain a professional engineering license as defined by the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau.

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.
