EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience :
- Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year experience in grounds maintenance or gardening work
Licenses and other Requirements
- Valid California Class A Drivers License and evidence of insurability.
- Valid Forklift and backhoe certification within six months of employment.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- TB Clearance
- Prepare grounds and athletic fields by fertilizing and dragging; perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties including minor sprinkler repair, mowing, edging, trimming; provide adequate, attractive and safe areas for assemblies, recreational activities and athletic events.
- Haul a variety of items such as trash and debris for grounds and facilities; clean landscaped areas and related items such as storm drains, fields and litter; prevent flooding; remove hazards; aerate and dethatch grounds as assigned; promote healthy growth; maintain attractive District grounds; locate, traps and baits rodents as directed.
- Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment including tractors, gang mowers, riding mowers, push mowers, forklift, dump truck and scissor lift; maintain tools and equipment; ensure the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Perform repairs on equipment including blades, reels, belts, bearings and lubricating tools; ensure that work related equipment is in proper working condition.
- Prepare written materials including supply requisitions, safety inspections, work orders, inventory records and time sheets; document activities; provide written reports and references.
- Respond to emergency situations; assist in resolving immediate safety concerns.
- Transport mowers and other heavy equipment to and from work sites; ensure availability for use in completing work assignments.
- Locate, trap and bait rodents using appropriate procedures to eliminate damage and/or health concerns caused by rodents.
- Attend unit meetings, in-service trainings and workshops; gather information required to perform job functions; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Knowledge of:
- Operation, preventive maintenance, and minor repair of a variety of grounds equipment including gang, riding and push mowers and other power-driven grounds equipment.
- Grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding.
- Methods, equipment, and materials used in landscaping and grounds keeping work.
- Cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.
- Basic record-keeping techniques.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Health and safety regulations.
Ability to:
- Operate and maintain a variety of power equipment and vehicles in the maintenance of designated grounds.
- Perform regular preventive maintenance work and minor repairs on grounds equipment.
- Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
- Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake, and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Maintain routine records related to work performed.
- Observe health and safety regulations.
- Perform heavy physical labor.
