Grounds Technician/Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

The City of Appleton is accepting applications for the full-time vacancy in the Parks and Recreation Department. The purpose of this position is to work closely with Reid Golf Course Superintendent to assist with the maintenance of Reid Golf Course and other city-owned property and park land during the golf off season. This is accomplished by using city equipment to complete daily tasks and objectives including the primary upkeep of Reid Golf Course. Additional duties include application of fertilizers and pesticides, irrigation system maintenance and project leadership. The applicant should have a knowledge of materials, tools and methods used in maintaining quality playing surfaces. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent and Grounds Manager during the off season. The employee will be dedicated to the golf course (75% of the year) when it is open and work park grounds in the off season (25%).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains Reid Golf Course under the direction of the golf course superintendent.
- Applies fertilizers and pesticides as assigned at the golf course and parks.
- Communicate with golf course superintendent, grounds and clubhouse staff regarding course conditions and tasks.
- Assist golf course superintendent with pest and disease scouting and identification.
- Coordinate, train, lead and oversee efforts of full time, part time and seasonal employees and volunteers.
- Performs a variety of general maintenance tasks on course including course setup, mowing and trimming, drainage, tree pruning and removal, landscape maintenance and construction.
- Performs a variety of general maintenance activities on course and park amenities including irrigation electrical & plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and painting
- Maintain the cleanliness of grounds: empty trash cans, pick up litter, clean rest rooms and shelters and inspect park to help ensure safe and proper conduct of patrons.
- Maintains signs, furniture, cabinets, buildings, , fencing, and other golf and park facilities.
- Operates and maintains irrigation system, assist golf course superintendent in watering decisions.
- Operates a variety of equipment and tools in the construction and repair of golf course and park facilities and equipment.
- Operates motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
- Constructs, maintains, and repairs golf course accessories.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates related vehicular equipment for maintaining golf and park facilities and grounds.
- Cleans golf and park buildings and facilities.
- Assist in maintenance of equipment and golf car fleet as needed.
- Collects litter, mows grass and rakes leaves.
- Removes snow, maintains ice rinks and groom cross-country ski trails.
- Performs landscaping activities.
- Supervise and train seasonal employees.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Advises and supports supervisory staff.
- Attends departmental meetings.
Requires considerable experience in golf course maintenance, application of fertilizer and pesticides, landscape construction and maintenance, and irrigation maintenance and repair. General knowledge of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and masonry, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
- Considerable knowledge of horticulture/landscaping and grounds maintenance and techniques associated with maintaining high quality playing surfaces.
- Ability to effectively and safely operate off-road motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
- General knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in the building trades such as irrigation plumbing & electrical welding, , carpentry, masonry, painting, etc.
- General skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of golf and park operations, facilities, and procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints.
- Ability to work effectively with assigned staff and make decisions under limited supervision.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, and to deal effectively with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Knowledge of the applicable safety practices of golf and landscape maintenance.
- Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting, and carrying.
- Ability to work in a variety of temperatures, weather and working conditions.
- Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.
- Possession of or ability to obtain certification as a pesticide applicator.
- Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL), with the N endorsement.
