The person in this position will assist the Foreman in conducting Thirty day, Six-week and Annual inspections; assure that mechanics correct inspection failures and file reports in accordance with state policies and guidelines. Assure that all inspections, technician follow-ups, and reports are complete, accurate, and timely. As directed by the Foreman, work with mechanics to evaluate and identify training needs that will help the mechanics maintain and update their skills. Make recommendations to Foreman about how this training can be provided. Provide hands-on training and mentoring to mechanics, as needed. Assist the Foreman with scheduling assigned work to mechanics for timely completion of required maintenance tasks. Monitor mechanic workloads and make recommendations concerning workloads to the Foreman. Supervise mechanics, as assigned by Foreman, to assure that shop facilities, personal protective equipment, shop equipment, and grounds are neat, clean, and free of potential safety and environmental hazards and violations. Assure that the shop repair equipment is operational and ready for use by the mechanics. Report recommendations of needed equipment repairs and follow through with repairs in a timely manner. Monitor the use of parts and supplies, in coordination with the Foreman, to assure that adequate inventory levels are maintained in order to respond to the immediate need for parts and supplies associated with the preventive maintenance, general repair, and annual inspection programs. Provide direct supervision of maintenance services and hands-on mechanical assistance to help with excess maintenance work and to fill in for Foreman or mechanics during absences. Monitor the Mechanic III (Fuel/Lube Technicians) in their duties as to fueling, lubrication services, and tire replacement. Provide other services in support of the school bus maintenance shops mission or the Office of Transportations mission as instructed by the Foreman and/or County Supervisor.
This position is located in the Office of Transportation/Richland Bus Shop.
Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of vehicle maintenance and repair experience in automotive or related repair; or any combination of training and experience that would enable an applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and to move objects weighing 125 pounds 30 feet. Must be able to operate power, hydraulic and electronic equipment. Must possess or acquire within 120 calendar days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, Tanker Operation certification, and criminal background check. Successful candidates will be extended an offer of conditional probationary employment, at which time they will be required to submit to and pass a drug screening for illegal drugs and must pass the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
