Position Overview: The position of Utilities Foreman position is a full time positIon and has the direct responsibility for personnel, equipment, scheduling, safety and quality of assignments. The Foreman will supervise and work alongside a crew of employees. This position requires a degree of experience in order to perform the tasks required and ensure that projects are completed on-time.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the project is completed on schedule and in accordance with the set specification
  • Trains, develops, and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders and disciplinary action, if necessary
  • Follows all requirements in the Foreman's Handbook, Employee Handbook, and Safety Manual including, but not limited to, safety training, employee observation, emergency procedures, and accident reporting and investigation
  • Ensures compliance of production staff with all company policies and procedures, OSHA, EPA, and NCDOT guidelines
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs and ensures that all employees reporting to Foreman do the same
  • Reads and follows plans, material lists, and guidelines and applies necessary timelines.
  • Submits crewmember's timesheets to payroll by required deadline
  • Fulfills all regular and advanced installation/construction duties including project layout and completes required paperwork in a timely manner
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
  • Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
  • Enforces all client required safety policies and procedures
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures
  • Attends meetings as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Performs equipment inspections and requests maintenance if necessary
  • Maintains good relations with general public, engineers, architects, inspectors and customers to facilitate job progress and promote a positive company image

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related piping experience required.
  • Must have experience operating heavy equipment, such as front end loader, dozer, excavator, etc.
  • Must have some grading and seeding experience.
  • Combinations of work experience and education may be considered.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • OSHA 10 hour preferred
  • Trenching safety and confined space certification preferred
  • First Aid/CPR training preferred
  • Current North Carolina Driver's License, required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Able to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Able to read plans, stakes.
  • Able to write simple correspondence.
  • Able to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding in order to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems/issues involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Experienced on all types of heavy equipment for dirt and site projects.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Able to multi task simultaneously

Physical Demands

  • Extensive physical activity performing strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature. Includes standing, sitting stooping, bending and crouching for extended periods of time,.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Capable of lifting up to 70 pounds.
  • Visual accuracy under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions in order to provide safe directions for operators of heavy equipment and other employees.
  • Able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment, and in and out of excavations, up to 20 feet in height.
  • Able to work overtime and weekends, if necessary.
  • Able to travel when required.

Environment Working Conditions

  • Outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (i.e., rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.)
  • Noise level in the work environment is loud.
  • Exposure to dust, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, concrete, and other environmental factors of a construction job site.
  • Work is performed near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and uneven surfaces.
