About the Role
Power the future of scientific discovery! Opentrons is looking for a dynamic Senior Electrical Engineer to take the helm of electrical design, development, and mass production for our cutting-edge robots. This exciting opportunity will see you dive into complex electrical development, expertly manage key projects, and mentor junior engineers. Reporting to the Sr. EE and Test Engineering Manager, you'll be at the heart of global collaborations with diverse teams, all while making a tangible impact on life science research. What You Will Do
Lead the electrical development of future Opentrons products and improve existing products, including schematic design, PCB layout, SMT design, prototyping, testing, mass manufacturing, and sustaining
Drive products through all phases of new product introduction (NPI), including coordination with sourcing, quality, test fixture design, and assembly method development
Establish and improve design, testing, manufacturing, and quality control processes to support document control, operational yield, and product quality
Drive EMC compliance throughout the entire product development lifecycle
Own project schedules, define major milestones, and communicate progress to stakeholders
Manage bills of materials (BOMs) and cost tracking to ensure alignment with target costs
Work closely and collaboratively with mechanical, software, design, testing, and manufacturing teams throughout development
Collaborate with external vendors and maintain strong relationships with part suppliers
Mentor junior and staff engineers on career development, product development, and mass manufacturing best practices
Who We Are Looking For
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience
Experience:
7+ years in an electrical engineering role
Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB layout
Experience with embedded systems, control systems, and sensors
Medium- to high-volume production experience
Previous experience working directly with manufacturers and/or contract manufacturers
Experience with test fixture development
Experience with DFMA, ECN processes, test reports, manufacturing/quality reports, and similar documentation
Proven leadership and project management experience
Experience bringing complex electromechanical products from concept to market
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Proficiency with Altium or equivalent tools for schematic capture and PCB layout
Strong proficiency with ERP systems and lean document management tools
Embedded and scripting development skills for prototyping and testing
Strong prototype development, testing, and measurement skills
Working knowledge of Python and C/C++
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
This role may include travel to China to work alongside overseas team members in manufacturing.
Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $110,000 and $148,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
