The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Fire Plans Examiner to, under limited supervision, perform plan reviews to ensure compliance with NC Fire Codes. Perform professional and highly technical-level work in the technical construction code field by the review of plans, specifications, and calculations to verify conformance to the technical construction-related codes as adopted by the State of North Carolina and City of Fayetteville. Provide information to the public and other staff members for the fire aspects of these technical codes. Assist, when necessary, with the permit application process by ensuring the completeness of applications and supporting documentation. Perform related work as required and enforce regulations as directed by ordinance, resolution, and state law. To provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Marshal and/or Fire Chief.
- Perform advanced technical commercial plans review for new and existing buildings, structures, and/or building systems to determine compliance with applicable building codes, laws, and regulations; review plans for renovations, alterations, additions, and/or field revisions; research project-related information; review submittals and make approval/denial decisions. May serve as lead worker, assign work and monitor work completion.
- Assist with directing, managing, supervising, and coordinating the activities and operations of the new construction side of the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire Department, including fire code compliance activities; coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies.
- Gather and document details of plans/submittal review; determine compliance and issue permits based upon approved plans.
- Perform field evaluations and investigations; perform research and review equipment specifications; consult with design professionals; determine and document compliance issues.
- Provide technical expertise, advice, and guidance related to code compliance questions and interpretations; provide communications and customer support to permit applicants and other stakeholders; coordinate reviews with other departments; and recommend alternatives and solutions for maintaining compliance.
- Provide technical information and make appropriate recommendations on fire damaged buildings to ensure the customer has all appropriate and sufficient information to determine the scope of the damage and areas needing repair.
- Maintain records, files, and documentation of code information, resources, and code changes.
- Identify, develop, implement, and maintain processes and practices that encourage, support, and promote effective, comprehensive, and meaningful citizen engagement.
Experience:
Four years of increasingly responsible plans examiner and/or inspection experience involving the full range of plans examiner and/or inspection duties.Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field.
LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:
Required:
North Carolina Standard Inspection Level III certification in Fire. Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license and ability to maintain insurability.
Preferred:
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Plan Examiner (CFPE).
