POSITION TITLE: Equipment Operator I - Trail

DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities

DIVISION: Park Maintenance

SALARY: $15.4581/hourly

CLOSING: Open until filled

Job Summary/Scope:

Operates light to medium machinery in the maintenance of the parks and parkways. Performs general maintenance work on park amenities, grounds and facilities as well as inspection and maintenance of natural trails located throughout park system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates tractors with hydraulic lifts, arm reach mowers or other attached accessories.
  • Operates such equipment as bobcat with all attachments; backhoe, high-loader and mowers.
  • Assists with construction of new trails in St. Joseph parks system.
  • Performs inspection, preventative maintenance and repairs on trails and associated amenities and facilities.
  • Ensures trails are safe and operational by clearing rocks and debris throughout trail system.
  • Assists in set-up and break-down of trail events.
  • Installs new signage, equipment and amenities.
  • Supervises prison work release inmates occasionally.
  • Secures all park facilities and buildings as necessary.
  • When necessary, assists emergency service personnel gain access to injured guests.
  • Assists and works with other maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Helps in the general maintenance of the park system.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skills in effective operation of necessary equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements associated with equipment operation.
  • Ability to operate trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, and other power equipment and hand tools used in park maintenance.
  • Knowledge of park department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually.
  • Knowledge of city's trail system, city codes and regulations or demonstrate the ability to learn and enforce these regulatory requirements within the first six months of employment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's license (CDL) is preferred.
  • Ability to relate professionally and courteously with fellow employees.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Material and Equipment Directly Used:

Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting where weather conditions can vary from extreme heat and cold, with high levels of dust, dirt, fumes and noise. Physical activity includes prolonged standing, bending, stooping, lifting, walking and uses arms and hands frequently. Must have the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 to 75 pounds and assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. One or more years of experience preferred to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
