SCHEDULE: Full Time
DEFINITION: Performs experienced apprentice plumber/gas fitter work. Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and gas equipment, pipes, and fixtures.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Assists in troubleshooting plumbing and gas system malfunctions. Assists in installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and gas equipment, pipes, and fixtures. Assists in the installation and repair of washbasins, faucets, fountains, water closets, water heaters, traps, and vents. Unclogs and clears stoppages and obstructions in drainage systems.
- Joins pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing, and welding equipment. Assists in cutting openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings. Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipes using hand and power tools or machines.
- Tests pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges. Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials. Initiates the ordering of supplies and replacement parts. Reads blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Assists in determining the layout of plumbing, water supply, waste, and drainage systems.
- Lifts and carries plumbing supplies, fixtures, equipment, tools, and materials. Operates hand and power tools. Bends, stoops, and crawls to investigate conditions and access plumbing and gas equipment in crawl spaces and similar areas. Drives automobiles and light duty trucks to transport workers, supplies, and materials to job sites.
- Records and maintains accurate records of work performed, time and materials used.
- Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisor/manager(s) and other employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent. One year of professional experience as a licensed apprentice plumber/gas fitter.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possession of an apprentice plumber/gas fitter license issued by the Maryland State Board of Plumbing or Baltimore County, or equivalent.
- Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of plumbing and gas fitting. Knowledge of plumbing codes. Knowledge of plumbing and gas fitting tools, materials, and equipment.
- Skill in plumbing and gas fitting. Skill in reading blueprints and construction drawings.
- Ability to read. Ability to follow instructions.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting, and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight, ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs and the use of tools and equipment.
- Works in confined spaces in proximity to loud machinery, frequently requires accessing and positioning oneself to reach limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.
- Recognizes exposure to live circuits and/or operating machinery in adverse weather conditions and travel to sites throughout Baltimore County.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.
- In addition to working the assigned work schedule, persons appointed to this class work scheduled overtime and must be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime calls before and after standard scheduled hours of work.
- Persons appointed to this class may be requested to work an alternative schedule or shift temporarily as designated by supervisor.
- Persons appointed to this class are designated as essential personnel and as such may be required to work during emergency events.
- License to drive in the State of Maryland and the ability to drive a pickup truck or van is required.
- License(s) if/when required for this position are subject to verification and must be maintained in good and active standing during the duration of employment without lapse. Lapse or void in valid/active licensure may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
- Some positions in this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.
FLSA: Non-exempt
SALARY: $21.98 - $33.19 per hour
OTHER COMPENSATION:
