General Definition of Work

The HVAC mechanic I, under general supervision, performs entry-level semi-skilled and technical work with minimal decision-making discretion related to the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning equipment and systems. As this position is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the maintenance operations supervisor or HVAC assistant supervisor.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures

Assist in repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning tasks involved in the replacement and repair of valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, controls, switches, gauges, tubing and pipes

Assist in the inspection and testing of heating, refrigeration, evaporative cooling and air conditioning equipment and systems to ensure proper functioning

Participate in adjusting and installing valves, thermostats, fans, pressure regulators and pumps

Insulate heating, refrigeration and air conditioning system pipes; cut, bend and join tubing and pipes. Repair condensate piping for various air conditioning units

Participate in the repair and installation of duct work and chassis covers

Participate in the inspection and repair of hot water and forced air heating and ventilation equipment

Cut threads and assemble pipe and tubing to other components of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment

Perform preventative maintenance on equipment including vacuum pumps, gas detectors, air compressors, meters gauges and torches

Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning trade

Knowledge of proper use and care of heating, ventilation and air conditioning tools and equipment

Knowledge of basic refrigeration, heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning principles

Knowledge of safe work practices

Ability to learn to perform skilled heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning tasks

Ability to learn to operate and maintain a variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning hand tools and power equipment

Ability to learn to install, maintain and repair a variety of refrigeration, heating, ventilation and cooling systems

Ability to learn to identify and correct refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning problems

Ability to learn to work independently in absence of supervision

Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Education and Experience

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent

HVAC diploma, certificate or equivalent preferred

HVAC system monitoring and controls experience, as well as PC skills preferred

Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

N.A.T.E certification (HVAC Support Technician Certification) or ability to obtain within 6 months of starting the position

Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job

Work can be physically demanding and often requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding and/or in tight spaces, bend and kneel and stand for long hours

The worker is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions

Work is generally in a moderately noisy to loud environment. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to occasionally shout to be heard above the ambient noise level

Work regularly requires the exchange of accurate and detailed information through verbal and written communication

Ability to move to other work locations

Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
