Equipment Operator III position supports the Core Services and Special Services divisions within the Solid Waste Services Department. Depending on the assignment, this position drives a fully automated truck and operates a mechanical arm which picks up the residential garbage container, recycling truck, and/or operates a boom truck. The EOIII is responsible for dumping the contents of the truck at the appropriate dump site. May be required to drive other types of trucks and/or equipment as needed.

  • Drives assigned vehicle on designated route within municipality to pick up and load recycling, garbage, and/or yard waste materials into truck
  • Provides oversight to assigned solid waste service routes and crews
  • Assists with training of new hires
  • Reviews routes with Crew Leads during a shift to balance the workload and mitigate vehicle breakdowns or accidents
  • Responds to missed collections as assigned
  • Uses appropriate in-vehicle technology to safely complete daily work assignments
  • Contends with and resolves customer complaints/concerns in and along the route
  • Responds to vehicle accidents, spills, and personal injuries and assists with the reporting and investigative process
  • Transports load to appropriate disposal facility to unload
  • Completes daily inspection of vehicle before and at the end of route (pre and post trip inspection and completes the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) for any damage or malfunction and provides report to supervisor
  • May operate other SWS equipment, EOI/EOII, etc. as needed
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and four years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving experience or formal trades experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

ADA and Other Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
