POSITION: Journeyman Mechanic
LOCATION: Service Department - Transportation Department
HOURS: 8 Hours Per Day (8:30am - 5:30pm)
DAYS: 260 Days Per Year; July - June
SALARY: $33.18 - $44.59 Per Hour (Range L)

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT/S: The job of Journeyman Mechanic is for the purpose/s of successfully repairing and maintaining school buses, motor-powered equipment, and service to all vehicles and equipment. May be required to cover school bus routes on a substitute basis.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Diagnose potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements.
- Perform such tasks as engine tune-up; major engine, transmission, differential, brake system, steering, suspension and electrical system repairs or adjustments.
- Execute preventive maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in safe operating condition and to minimize vehicle break downs.
- Replace defective parts/systems for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition.
- Perform maintenance, service and repairs in a timely fashion to ensure vehicle availability.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of maintenance costs, repairs and inspections in accordance with ODE rules and district policy.
- Order fuel, oil, parts, tires and other materials necessary to the operation of the shop.
- Organize and lay out jobs for any employee assigned to work in the shop.
- Estimate costs of repair projects in terms of labor, material and over-head.
- Inspect District-owned equipment on a regular basis in accordance with ODE rules and District policy for purposes of preventative maintenance and state and district reporting.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Attend internal and external training programs, e.g., equipment/safety for the purpose of maintaining skills and district policy.
- Coordinate with district and other staff for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
- Cover drive bus routes/trips as required.
- Advise administration on the need for and specifications recommeneded for purchases of replacement vehicles.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Maintain a professional decorum.
- Ensure work is completed in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Establish and follow safe working practices.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience Preferred: Four (4) years of experience as a journeyman school bus mechanic.
- Provide personal tools needed in line with industry standards to perform job duties.
- Ensure all school buses are maintained and reparied in accordance with ODE rules and District policy.
- Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
Skills to perform skilled mechanical work on a variety of pieces of district-owned equipment. Ability to repair, install and trouble-shoot complex equipment systems.
Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials, and processes of the mechanical trade; design, installation and maintenance of mechanical systems; tire repair and replacement on light duty vehicles; repairs on electrical systems, suspensions and drive train of light trucks and buses.
Knowledge of, or the ability to learn ODE rules and district policies relating to the care, maintenance, operation and administration of school bus maintenance operation.
Abilities to maintain gas and diesel engines; operate hand and power tools; understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and meet schedules and deadlines; use of diagnostic equipment; use of computerized maintenance, diagnostic and record keeping programs, emailed and electronic or web based parts catalogs and ordering applications. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling/fingering, talking/hearing conversations, near visual acuity/depth perception. Ability to work in a smoke free environment.
Ability to speak a second language preferred.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: High School diploma or equivalent.
LICENSES, BONDING AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED: District standard Fingerprint and Criminal Background clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment). Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License and ODE School Bus Driver’s Certificate, and maintain a valid ODE Inspector’s Certification (or ability to obtain within six (6) months).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel. Reports to the Transportation Director.
