JOB SUMMARY:
This is a non-supervisory position. Under general supervision, the Water/Wastewater Plant Operator will operate, monitor, maintain, and trouble-shoot the wastewater treatment facility and its processes. The primary function of this position is to maintain and operate the city's water/wastewater production, treatment, and storage in a safe, effective, and efficient manner Work involves responsibility for the technical aspects of plant operations, compliance with state and federal operating regulations, and underground sewer system. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Senior Operator or Water/Wastewater Plant Superintendent, subject to re through reports and results achieved.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Checks chemical levels at regular intervals.
Run routine laboratory tests to determine proper chemical treatment.
Collect water samples.
Check operation of equipment in plant and make repairs or reports of defects.
Backwash filters at regular intervals to ensure proper flow and drain sludge from bottom of basins as needed.
Maintains plant records.
Cleans and maintains facilities and grounds.
May assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, or annual reports to State and Federal agencies.
Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of City water/wastewater utilities to include water pipes, water pumps and water main systems.
Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as repairs to water/wastewater system.
Completes reports on daily work assignments and activities as required.
Organizes tools, equipment and supplies necessary to complete assignments.
Inspects, cleans and maintains equipment and tools in safe operating order.
Performs routine inspections of assigned areas to detect any necessary repairs or hazardous conditions.
Maintains safety regulations including wearing appropriate clothing, erecting proper barricades and signage and using proper equipment and tools.
Position requires the ability to work off-duty hours and perform on-call duties.
Travels to attend meetings and training.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, pumps, compressors, generators, common.
Ability to use the appropriate specialized hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, radio, and phone, and equipment specific to area of assignment including ladders, testing equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or its equivalent.
Minimum two (2) years' experience in Water and Wastewater Treatment.
Distribution and Collection experience preferred but not required.
TCEQ Grade C certification in Water Treatment; or ability to acquire within twelve (12) months; OR
TCEQ Grade C certification in Wastewater Treatment; or ability to acquire within twelve (12) months;
Valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license; Class "B" CDL is preferred but not required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations as applicable to the position.
Knowledge of and experience with machinery and utility equipment; ability to work in mechanically oriented situations repairing equipment, lines, etc., and to follow instructions pertaining to their needs; ability to take and understand oral (and occasionally written) instructions; and ability to perform strenuous physical labor and to work under adverse weather conditions.
Knowledge of general maintenance and repair techniques for common tools and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work; and their basic safety precautions and procedures.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned light equipment, power and hand tools.
Knowledge of safe handling techniques of hazardous chemicals and materials.
Knowledge of and ability to follow City policies and procedures.
Skill in following oral and written communications and directions.
Skill in planning and organizing materials and supplies necessary to complete daily tasks and assignments.
Skill in operating assigned equipment, tools and vehicles.
Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
Working knowledge of proper water works plumbing methods and techniques; working knowledge of light and some heavy equipment operating principles, practices and procedures; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to the City of Burnet's Water/Wastewater Department.
Skill in the operation of a variety of light and some heavy equipment and a variety of hand tools.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to perform tasks effectively and efficiently.
Ability to plan and schedule work and implement directives without constant supervision.
Ability to present a professional appearance and conduct when representing the City.
Ability to work cooperatively and productively with supervisor, individuals, co-workers, and groups of persons at all levels of activity, contributing to a strong spirit of teamwork.

This position does involve a combination of indoor and outdoor tasks. Incumbent may be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, and fumes, infectious diseases, air, and water-borne pathogens, poisonous insects, and other environmental factors common to water, wastewater, and underground utilities. Work is exposed to moving mechanical parts or in high, precarious places. Noise levels vary from minor to moderate.
