General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate technical work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive and specialized equipment, performing computer diagnostics and fabrication methods, maintaining records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
The ideal candidate will be able to perform maintenance/repairs on light duty vehicles (passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV's, van, mini-busses, etc.) to include: replacing air, hydraulic and anti-lock brakes, repairing transmissions; repairing light duty gas and diesel engines, working on electrical systems, repairing heating and cooling systems, and repairing steering and suspension systems. They will also be able to perform repairs on ancillary equipment typical of municipal fleets including: lifts, light bars and lighting accessories. They should have experience troubleshooting and have experience with newer computerized diagnostic programs. A desire to learn/train on heavier duty systems and fire trucks is strongly desired.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED and moderate experience in automotive equipment maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications
Possession of or ability to obtain Forklift certification issued by a nationally recognized agency at hire.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification issued by the National Institute for Automotive Excellence is preferred.
Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position.
Valid Driver's License of the appropriate class.
Essential Functions

Performs a variety of maintenance work on light-duty vehicles such as cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, mini-buses, marine apparatus, and trailers.
Troubleshoots mechanical issues; operates diagnostic tools and equipment to check and evaluate electronic engine and other vehicle safety systems, gas and diesel engines, HVAC systems, hydraulic and anti-brake systems, steering, suspension, transmission, and small engine repairs; updates diagnostic software and equipment to maintain latest available diagnostic information.
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles such as fluid and lubrication, oil and filter changes, tire rotations, etc.
Operates forklifts, various diagnostic tools and equipment platforms, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialty tools.
Maintains workspace and/or job site cleanliness according to prescribed procedures; cleans and stores tools in proper storage area; cleans workstations and floors.
Maintains maintenance records to include tracking mileage, parts, and work performed on vehicles.
Assists Equipment Mechanic II with fire apparatus and heavy equipment work.
Operates and maintains motor vehicles or other work-related equipment requiring a valid driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General knowledge of methods practices, materials, instruments and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance; general knowledge of equipment safety practices; general knowledge of City policies and procedures; general knowledge of safety standards and practices in a shop environment; general knowledge of gas and light diesel internal combustion engines, small engine and equipment repairs, electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, and brake systems.
Skill in using and caring of various tools and equipment; skill in maintaining records and reports; skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing; skill in troubleshooting and repairing gas and light duty diesel internal combustion engine including electrical, HVAC systems and brakes; skill in advanced diagnostic abilities to diagnose automotive computer and network systems, steering and suspension repairs, operating tools and equipment used in making repairs of gas and diesel engines and other mechanic related duties; skill in operating equipment for testing purposes; skill in using computers and related software applications.
Ability to read manuals and specifications and diagrams to obtain knowledge and familiarity with parts and equipment; ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, supervisors, vendors, and the general public.
Working Conditions
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock, frequently requires exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
