The Waste Services Superintendent - Convenience Centers performs work of considerable to substantial difficulty in supervising crews of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled Supervisors, Convenience Center Customer Service Field Reps, Equipment Operators, and other personnel in a variety of recycle activities. The incumbent may provide administrative and technical assistance to the Department Director when requested.
Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The department also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.
Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.
- Provides customer service support to Convenience Centers, trains and assignments duties to Convenience Centers employees.
- Assigns and prioritizes all work order requests; determines how it will be funded; and confirms completion of assignment.
- Schedules the workflow of projects to personnel are available and efficiently utilized during each phase of the project to include coordinating work of different sub-contractors to ensure timely workflow.
- Inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure that work is completed in a timely manner and according to specifications; advises them of unusual problems, procedures and practices.
- Evaluates employees and recommends promotions, disciplinary action, transfers and dismissals.
- Instruct subordinates regularly in safety, methods of work, operation and maintenance of equipment and other special areas.
- Ensures that Safety Program policies and procedures are relayed to subordinates and that procedures are being followed; evaluates and recommends revisions if necessary.
- Services, Building Inspection or others when applicable to ensure all required codes are met in the convenience centers.
- Assists other skilled workers, semi-skilled workers and others when necessary and as assigned.
Two (2) years of college from an accredited school and five (5) years increasingly responsible experience in customer service, recycling industry, and household hazardous waste management or similar industry experience including three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

High School diploma and ten (10) years increasingly responsible experience in customer service, recycling industry, and household hazardous waste management or similar industry experience including three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands include walking, standing, climbing, lifting, stress, and handling of dangerous materials.
Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force).
Working conditions include performing job duties indoors and outdoors with extreme temperatures, wet and humid surroundings, sufficient noise, fumes, odors, and dust.

- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, supplies and techniques used waste collection or relative work (transportation/logistics/trucking)
- Thorough knowledge of the operation, capabilities and uses for the wide variety of heavy and medium equipment typically used in modern waste collection/disposal.
- Experience in maintaining accurate records and writing detailed reports.
