Pavement Operator

Job Title: Paver Operator
Department: Operations and Support

Job Summary:

The Paver Operator will assist with paving operations and related mechanical and welding work. They will help maintain and service paving equipment and support general shop maintenance activities. The Paver Operator will also participate in striping and traffic control duties and should have experience in both.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Performs routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water, and tires
• Operates paving machinery including asphalt pavers and rollers
• Operates graders and tractors as needed to prepare surfaces
• Operates forklifts and dump trucks to transport materials
• Operates equipment for site preparation, roadwork, snow removal, and other tasks
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of paving and related equipment
• Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
• Inspects paving equipment before and after use to ensure functionality
• Loads and unloads materials and moves them to appropriate storage areas
• Follows all safety procedures while operating paving and related equipment
• Performs regular maintenance and minor repairs on paving equipment when necessary

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Proficient in written and oral communication skills
• Basic computer skills and ability to understand written instructions
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and, at times, stressful environment
• Solid math skills, including basic algebra and geometry
• Welding and mechanical repair skills
• Knowledge of paving operations and equipment maintenance

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least three years of experience operating paving equipment or similar machinery
• Understanding of job site safety procedures
• Familiarity with preventive maintenance on paving machines and construction vehicles
• Willingness to work varying shifts with 2 weeks' notice
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting and operating paving equipment
• Standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands for extended periods
• Exposure to loud noises and outdoor elements (heat, cold, dust, etc.)
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Visual and auditory ability to meet safety and operational requirements

Special Qualifications/Requirements:

• Must pass required background checks (federal, state, or local)
• Valid state driver's license and Class A CDL
