Summit County is seeking a full-time Landfill Operator to perform skilled tasks in the operation and service of equipment and tools needed to construct, operate, maintain, or repair county landfill sites. This includes operating heavy-duty trucks for hauling roll-off bins and other solid waste-related trucks. The Landfill Operator will also perform a variety of public contact duties to authorize public admittance into the county transfer station and monitor waste to ensure compliance with facility regulations. Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in operation and maintenance of light to heavy duty equipment; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a valid CDL-Class B issued by your state of residence.
- Must be able to comply with applicable county and departmental policies and safety standards.
- Must complete 40 hour hazardous waste course within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates specialized light to heavy duty equipment such as hand tools, weeds sprayers, grader, scraper, back hoe, track hoe, compactor, heavy articulating off road dump truck, dozer and other related heavy equipment utilized in the moving, covering and compacting of waste deposited into the county landfill.
- Checks and services assigned equipment and as otherwise assigned; performs routine maintenance and repairs; reports mechanical problems for shop repairs; operates a variety of hand and power tools in performing general maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Performs as landfill gate attendant; may assure appropriate admittance of public to landfill; maintains detailed records of type of waste entering the landfill; prepares daily reports.
- Observes waste being brought into the county landfill to identify hazardous waste or other materials excluded from deposit in public landfill. Separates and removes materials from the waste stream when necessary to exclude these materials.
- Monitors customer activities to assure compliance with established rules and regulations; observes suspicious activity; prevents the deposit of hazardous waste materials; operates radio and twoway communications as needed to alert equipment operators of suspicious activity or waste loads, or other required communications.
- Deals with public. Takes and reports complaints; apprises public of landfill requirements and fees; resolves issues face-to-face or seeks supervisory assistance.
- Provides assistance on special construction and maintenance projects undertaken within the landfill; may provide physical or equipment labor related to cutting grades, modifying drainage system or installing protective liners to protect ground water, etc.
- Performs duties with due regard for personal safety and that of other employees.
- Performs other duties (including general labor) as assigned.
