Position Title : Maintenance HVAC Technician
Reports To : Director of Facilities / Asst. Supt. of Operations
Job Type : Full time, 12 month position

Summary : A Maintenance HVAC Technician is responsible for the upkeep and functionality of District facilities, including its buildings, grounds, and equipment. The Technician supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across all school facilities. The Technician performs a variety of maintenance tasks, troubleshoots problems, and plays a key role in maintaining a comfortable, safe and healthy learning environment for students and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems in classrooms, administrative offices, cafeterias, gyms, and other school facilities.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure systems meet safety and performance standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical issues in HVAC systems quickly and efficiently.
  • Regularly inspecting buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify potential issues and ensure safety standards are met.
  • Monitor and maintain building automation systems (BAS) for climate control.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including health and safety codes in educational settings.
  • Maintain accurate service logs and maintenance records for all equipment, parts and supplies.
  • Coordinate with school staff and facilities personnel to minimize disruptions during maintenance or repairs.
  • Respond to HVAC-related emergencies during school hours or after-hours as needed.
  • Use and operate all tools, vehicles, etc. to maintain and service District buildings in a safe, timely, skillful manner.
  • Run, cut, bend, sweat, and silver solder copper pipe or tubing.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures when handling equipment and materials.
  • Wash, clean and maintain department tools and equipment.
  • Assist in loading and unloading of materials, equipment and supplies from trucks.
  • Removal of snow/ice from sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Any other appropriate tasks or duties that may be assigned from time to time by supervisors.

Qualifications Requirements :

Education, Credentials and Experience :

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification in HVAC preferred.
  • Valid HVAC technician license or certificate (as required by local authorities).
  • Minimum 3 years of HVAC experience, preferably in educational or institutional facilities.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification required.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient and programmable HVAC control systems.
  • Strong understanding of indoor air quality standards and ventilation requirements in schools.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive to District buildings, as necessary.
  • Ability to pass background checks and fingerprinting as required by the District.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Must possess strong, positive interpersonal skills including communication, ability to work with a group on problem solving, listening skills, positive attitude and deportment.
  • Mechanical Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple blueprints and diagrams. Basic repair and wiring skills. In-depth knowledge of specific trade areas sufficient to deal with complex maintenance problems.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence, logs and other records.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to work well under pressure.Must be able to read, learn, and respond to a variety of subjects and changing situations as required of this position; must be able to understand and execute written and verbal work orders; must be able to follow directions and demonstrate a high degree of common sense and flexibility with work assignments; must have strong problem solving skills; must be able to exercise independent judgment on a daily basis; must be able to concentrate, pay close attention to detail, and be able to stay focused and stay on assigned tasks in spite of repeated interruptions to help ensure safe job performance, including the safe operation of tools while working around moving parts and electric current, driving and working on rooftops; must be able to work in fast paced environment and prioritize work to meet strict deadlines; must always maintain a calm demeanor and be able to respond to phone and computer requests; must be able to utilize excellent time management skills and work effectively with minimum supervision.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, walk, sit, climb a ladder, and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach, grasp and use tools and controls and use repetitive motions. The employee is frequently required to stoop and kneel. The employee must normally lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds. Regular attendance on the job is expected. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Must be able to work in typical shop and on-site conditions both indoors and outdoors; must be able to work in and around sanitary sewage, electrical hazards and/or in areas of potential poor indoor air quality that may be due to a variety of sources including dust, poor ventilation, and/or a buildup of contaminants such as mold and bacteria; may be required to handle cleaning solutions/chemicals that have unpleasant odors on occasion; must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions with no effective protection from weather and on all types of terrain when necessary. Hazards include working in high locations, confined spaces, and proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical current; subject to noise; subject to indoor temperature fluctuations from energy management programs. The employee will occasionally work in conditions of extreme heat or cold. Occasional after-hours or weekend work for emergencies or scheduled projects.

Contract terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, agreements and approvals.
