Hourly Wage:

New Hire: $26.27/27.32* 90 days: $28.40 1 year: $29.52 2 years: $30.56 3 years: $32.99

About Heavy Equipment Operator:

Operates the motor grader, dozer, excavator, dump truck, and other equipment with complex controls.

  • Operates various types of heavy equipment in construction, precision grading and repair of roads and/or park facilities, as referenced in equipment classification list.
  • Operates equipment associated with snow removal operations.
  • Drives a dump truck (up to 60,000 lbs) to transport sand, rock, dirt, brush, and supplies.
  • Performs concrete, asphalt, and seal coat patching and replacement.
  • Acts as flagger during road construction work.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and materials from trailers.
  • Services and performs minor repairs to equipment.
  • Replaces and repairs road signage.
  • Utilizes tablets, computers, and other technology to update GIS system, complete payroll, complete Iowa one call tickets, and other tasks.
  • Operates a truck equipped with water storage tank and pump to flush storm drainage structures and other various tasks.
  • May operate distributor truck for applying emulsion for seal coating.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned to help drive a high level of customer satisfaction, fulfill the County's Mission and Strategic Direction, and abide by the Linn County Core Values.
  • Performs a variety of physical tasks associated with road construction, maintenance, and repair including bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, twisting, crawling, reaching, and sitting. Stand and walk frequently, sometimes on uneven and unstable surfaces such as at construction sites, roadway, or ditch embarkments. Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and terrains.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment OR two (2) years of experience working as a Light Equipment Operator for the County, including on-the-job experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator sufficient to meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Two (2) years of experience plowing snow with truck using adjustable plow.
