The employee will function as an Engineering Technician I that will serve under the Maintenance Operations Support Team. This unit supports the development and delivery of the Highway Maintenance Improvement Program (HMIP), and Interstate Maintenance Projects, facilitates routine and emergency maintenance operations, and manages Division One's GIS initiatives and inventories. This unit also works with engineering firms, embedded CEI staff, and DOT staff to develop resurfacing and preservation contracts, ADA improvements, guardrail installation and improvement projects, spot safety projects, and annual needs contracts.

The employee in this position will assist in collecting and analyzing roadway data, generating estimates and plans for roadway improvements, perform field surveys, and record and maintain GIS data. The employee will be expected to communicate with the maintenance, construction, and project development units in Division One with updates for ongoing and planned work. The employee will use collected data and analytics to create various report documents including spreadsheets, maps, and summaries. The employee will assist higher level Technicians and Engineers with other duties as instructed.

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and / or construction surveying

Additional Expectations:

The employee will be required to drive a pickup truck, carryall, or automobile. The employee will perform various types of field and office work. Types of field work will include project scoping, project inspection, surveying, drainage studies, and data collection. Types of office work will include utilizing various computer programs to compute calculations, record and analyze data, generate engineer's estimates, and create plan drawings and maps. The employee will be expected to be capable of performing algebraic and geometric calculations, possess intermediate computer skills, and competently review and retain information from various technical resources, policies, specifications, statutes, etc. The employee will be expected to assist in severe weather and emergency response operations by collecting route condition data, providing coordination between maintenance and contractor staff, and inspecting contractor operations. The employee should possess a strong work ethic and maintain working relations with other employees and the public. The employee should have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. The employee will be expected to establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors, and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes will be needed. The employee must have the ability to legally operate a State vehicle.

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
