Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Water System Mechanic and/or up-line management, is responsible to operate and maintain all heavy equipment consisting of complicated and specialized gasoline, diesel, or electrically powered equipment used throughout the water utility; vehicles include front-end loaders, bulldozers, pay loaders, and Providence Water hoisting vehicles all related to the installation and repair of water mains. In addition to holding a valid driver's license, the Heavy Equipment Operator must possess and maintain a Commercial Driver's License, and a Hoisting Engineer's License. Must be State Certified with continuing following established procedures while adhering to prescribed safety standards. Works a 40-hour week with specific shifts identified in posting, and reasonably responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis when requested by a Supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Operates a utility truck and appurtenances such as compressors, pumps, generators, and valve operators.
- Operates all heavy equipment.
- Operates hoisting vehicles.
- Operates backhoes for all aspects of excavating sites involving routine Providence Water operations.
- Complies with all safety regulations, traffic regulations, relevant practices, procedures, rules, regulations and ordinances, and state and federal laws.
- Maintains simple records of time and equipment usage.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip preventative maintenance checks and inspections.
- Performs inventory checks of all tools and equipment stored on vehicle.
- Cleans vehicle daily, as needed.
- When not engaged in operating, maintaining, or servicing equipment, performs duties as a Utility Worker.
- Utilizes Providence Water radio communications procedures.
- May be asked to direct traffic during construction.
- Adheres to all Providence Water safety procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Experience in the operation and preventative maintenance of equipment as demonstrated by holding the lower classification of Utility Worker.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License and a Class B CDL with air-brake endorsement and is responsible to maintain all vehicles maintenance logs.
- Must possess and maintain a Hoisting Engineer's and Hydraulic Delivery License.
- Must be in possession in Competent Person Training Certification.
- Must be able to demonstrate safe digging practices as determined by a committee consisting of one Supervisor of Water Maintenance Crew and two Water System Mechanics.
- Must possess a Level I-Drinking Water Operator's Certificate and maintain certification by attending continuing education (C.E.U.) programs.
- Knowledge of water distribution systems, facilities, and appurtenances.
- Knowledge of job-site safety and traffic control methods to minimize work site accidents; familiarity with construction traffic control practices.
- Ability to make operating adjustments and performs general maintenance work on equipment.
- Working knowledge of the operations of gasoline and diesel motors and equipment.
- Must be able to pass all requirements and conditions to be fitted to wear the appropriate job required respirator.
- Flexibility to work an alternate workweek including weekends.
- Ability to work independently without close supervision.
- Ability to perform heavy physical construction activities under adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
Training Requirements
Upon Appointment:
- Customer Service Training
- Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training
- Must attend and successfully complete work zone safety training and 10 hours OSHA Safety Training within ninety (90) days of appointment
Sustainment:
- Participation in customer service training every 24 months
- Must maintain a valid State Driver's License and a Class B CDL, with air-brake endorsement
- Must maintain a Hoisting Engineer's and Hydraulic Delivery License
- Must maintain a Competent Person Training Certification
- Must maintain a Level I-Drinking Water Operator's Certificate and maintain certification by attending continuing education (C.E.U.) programs.
- Must be able to pass all requirements and conditions to be fitted to wear the appropriate job required respirator.
The term "limited" means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
