Job Description

AEP is seeking a Civil Engineer with six (6) or more years of civil site engineering experience and leadership skills that are searching for an opportunity to join the Civil & Geotechnical Engineering (CGE) group at American Electric Power (AEP). This position offers unique career development opportunities and challenging assignments across AEP's 11-state footprint performing civil site engineering, land development, stormwater management design, and roadway design assignments for Electric Substation, Transmission Line, and Telecommunications projects.

The primary location of this posting is in Roanoke, VA.

Qualified candidates shall possess knowledge of civil site engineering principles through education and/or demonstrated project experience related to:

  • site grading
  • stormwater management
  • drainage design/analysis
  • roadway design
  • retaining walls
  • erosion and sediment control
  • permitting
  • surveying

Knowledge and/or experience using AutoCAD and Civil3D software is required.

Successful candidates will possess the proven ability to assess and recommend best case civil engineering solutions and collaborate with higher level non-civil engineers and other project stakeholders in solving civil engineering related challenges in consideration of safety, performance, cost, constructability, risk, and liability.

Travel (~10%) is required for this position and will consist of trips to the field to diagnose civil engineering issues related to electric transmission lines and substations. Field assignments are generally within a 5-hour driving distance of the assigned office location. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. Some OT may be required, as approved.

Minimum Requirements:

The Engineer Sr has typically acquired six (6) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET ; or four (4) years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.
  • ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • VP or above may waive the ABET Accreditation requirement
