Overview

The Seattle Public Librarys mission is to bring people, information and ideas together to enrich lives and build community. We view Seattle as a city where imagination and opportunity continue to thrive. Since 1891, we have grown from a single reading room in Pioneer Square to a world-class library system with 27 locations.

The Library works every day to foster and support a healthy city and a healthy democracy. We do this work guided by the principles of intellectual freedom, literacy and the love of learning, racial equity, privacy and confidentiality, respect for the community, strong partnerships and innovation. We are an active and committed partner in the City of Seattle's Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Library employees are highly regarded by the public for their knowledge, quality of service and caring. As a workplace, we value respectful and transparent communication, partnership and engagement. We are enriched individually and organizationally because of our diversity and growth mindset. We take time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of others. If you share these values and meet the qualifications, the Library invites you to apply for the Automated Materials Handling System Operator positions.

The Automated Material Handling System (AMHS) is used to check in, sort and distribute nearly 80% of all circulating materials in the Library system.

The AMHS operator simultaneously juggles the roles of operating the materials sorters, deploying delivery totes, moving materials between the sorter and staging areas, and monitoring and troubleshooting problems with software and machinery. The operator must be able to follow safety procedures when working around mechanical lifts, conveyors, sorting arms and devices. Accomplishing this requires the ability to recognize problems rapidly, to recall operating procedures quickly and accurately, and the ability to perform in a fast paced work environment that is usually controlled by the speed of the sorter.

Operate the automated materials handling system equipment. This includes operating conveyors, scanner tools and devices that load, sort and stack library materials; starting up and shutting down the equipment; and troubleshooting problems with sorting and equipment.

Constantly monitor the equipment through visual inspection and auditory attention. Stay aware of developing flow problems, equipment deployment needs, mechanical malfunctions and sorting glitches. This position requires walking among the sorting belts and tote chutes, pushing totes into, and out of, the sorting area and moving from one point to another, arranging materials and making quick adjustments.

Communicate and coordinate activities with other AMHS operators quickly and efficiently . The operator removes jams and makes minor adjustments to the sorting and sensing devices. In order to avoid backups and jams, the operator uses provided technology to prioritize the sorting of materials and to determine which materials should be sorted first.
