The Equipment Operator is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and repair of County highways, bridges, and other infrastructure, as well as supporting landfill operations. This role involves operating a variety of heavy equipment for road, bridge, and facility maintenance, in addition to performing manual tasks to upkeep County properties and carry out related functions.

  • Operates a range of medium to heavy equipment, including trucks, plows, tractors, motor graders, chainsaws, compactors, front-end loaders, dump trucks, tub grinders, and other specialized equipment, to maintain County highways, bridges, buildings, and other properties.
  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled manual labor tasks for the maintenance of highways, bridges, and other properties. Responsibilities include hauling cover dirt, compacting waste, clearing snow, and graveling, patching, and grading roads.
  • Conducts routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and repairs on vehicles and equipment to ensure their proper functionality and safety.
  • Inspects and monitors the quality of work completed by contractors, ensuring compliance with established standards.
  • Safely transports equipment to and from work sites as required.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, supporting the efficient operation of the department.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in equipment operation or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

  • Occupational hazards and safe work methods.
  • Safe driving practices.

SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in operating a wide range of medium to heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Skilled in preparing and maintaining records and logs.
  • Competence in safely transporting equipment to work sites.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting with coworkers, supervisors, the public, and contractors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this classification typically require frequent physical activity, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. The ability to identify and differentiate between various equipment parts and wiring layouts is essential.

  • Heavy Work: Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures and intense noise.
  • Ability to travel as needed for job functions.
