The Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens is seeking a dedicated Facility Maintenance Technician to join our team. You'll be at the heart of maintaining the systems that keep our zoo safe, efficient, and welcoming to visitors and animals alike. This position plays a vital role in ensuring our facilities are safe, functional, and meet the high standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). As a Facility Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for a wide range of repair and upkeep tasks across our zoo grounds and behind-the-scenes operations. This includes repairing walkways, patching drywall, replacing fixtures, assisting with animal care support systems, and addressing urgent maintenance needs as they arise. T he role requires skill in light carpentry, painting, drywall repair, and minor electrical and plumbing work. What Youll Do:
- Perform hands-on maintenance work on a variety of essential systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, safety, plumbing and waste management across the zoo.
- Troubleshoot issues, conduct routine inspections, and assist with preventive maintenance to keep all building systems operating safely and efficiently.
- Collaborate with other team members to maintain facility infrastructure and respond promptly to repair requests or urgent system failures.
- Contribute to the zoos high standards of safety, cleanliness, and functionality by ensuring that all systems meet operational and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain the integrity and appearance of infrastructure by fixing walls, ceilings, doors, windows, floors, fences, and fixtures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly to prevent small problems from becoming larger, costlier repairs.
- Assist with setup and upkeep of exhibit features, guest amenities, and staff workspaces.
- Support larger facility upgrades and improvement projects as needed.
- A combination of one (1) year of experience or education in general repairs, with a strong focus on plumbing and drainage systems.
- Knowledge of plumbing systems, including emergency repairs, sewer line repair, drain repair, and more.
- Ability to work a schedule that includes a Saturday or Sunday.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Florida Drivers License with a clear driving record.
- Knowledge and expertise in plumbing systems, including emergency repairs, sewer line repair, and drain maintenance.
- A proactive, hands-on approach to troubleshooting and repairs in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in reading measurements, interpreting plans, and performing basic math calculations.
- Ability to operate motorized cart, large equipment/ trucks, hand, and power tools.
- Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
- Ability to transport and move items up to 50 pounds frequently for short distances.
- Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs.
- Ability to consistently remain on feet for prolonged periods of time.
- Exceptional visual acuity required, along with the ability to communicate, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio.
- Manual dexterity for standing, reaching, flexibility, and body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, stoop, bend, lift, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, dig and prolonged standing.
- Grasp, turn, and manipulate objects of varying size and weight, requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to access and navigate each department at the organization on foot and/or by a motorized cart.
- Visual and auditory acuity appropriate plant care for safety and to discern differences in documents/labels.
