Hours: 8 hours / day

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: A09

Qualifications:

College hours, high school diploma or GED

Five years' experience in vehicle repair

Relevant technical experience in school bus/medium vehicle and maintenance

Formal training in vehicle repair (preferred)

ASE and/or TASBT certification(s) in vehicle repair (preferred)

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements

Pass annual physical in accordance with state law

School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain within six months of hire date

Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy

Able to communicate in English (written and oral)

Able to understand and respond to verbal and written instructions

Able to work productively without continual supervision

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) vehicle inspector license (including commercial motor vehicle [CMV])

Able to read and interpret maps and routes

Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits

Primary Purpose:

Coordinate, supervise, and provide leadership in day-to-day activities of the repair shop and personnel to maintain the safety and reliability of the fleet for the transportation of students and employees of Katy ISD. Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district, the students and the community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the employees of the vehicle repair facility.
  • Motivate, counsel, and monitor employees under their supervision.
  • Maintain accurate and current records of all labor/materials/supplies utilized in the shop.
  • Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting (time cards, tardies, absences, etc.).
  • Participate in the hiring and training of shop employees.
  • Performs vehicle maintenance and repairs - gasoline and diesel engines, autos, transit buses, etc.
  • Perform Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle inspections (including commercial motor vehicle [CMV] inspections).
  • Manage and evaluate preventive maintenance programs.
  • Utilize shop maintenance software and computer diagnostics.
  • Acquire and maintain TPCA Certificate for Class A and B UST Facility operator.
  • Rebuild engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, brakes (mechanical and air), front ends and suspension systems, rear differentials, and suspension systems, and/or other major systems/components.
  • Able to remove, repair starters, alternators, fuel pumps, injectors, etc.
  • Diagnose, analyze, and tune engines, i.e., proficient in the use of engine analyzers.
  • Maintain accurate and current records of vehicle maintenance and repairs performed.
  • Available for after hours and weekend work as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency with upgraded fleet vehicles.
  • Responsible for the upkeep, repair, replacement, and protection of personal tools. Certain large tools and equipment are supplied by the District.
  • Operate any Katy ISD school bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while following all traffic laws, district policies, district regulations and Transportation Department regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Personal computer, printer, copier, digital cameras, cell phone and diagnostic equipment for buses. Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks, and lift equipment. School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.).

Working Conditions:

Frequent walking, standing, twisting, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, environmental allergens, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Irregular hours and occasional prolonged hours. Repetitive hand motions, moderate carrying, reaching and capable of lifting 100 pounds.
