This position is responsible for inspecting residential buildings to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Responsibilities may include performing inspections of residential properties; preparing reports; and responding to standard inquiries from the public.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
- Inspects residential properties for compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Compiles information to complete reports outlining inspection findings; reviews inspection reports for accuracy.
- Prepares residential properties for demolition as needed; monitors contractors in performing demolitions to ensure proper completion.
- Responds to standard inquiries from the public.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree; or, High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and 1 year of related experience; or, all required certification(s); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
- Lead inspector and risk assessor certification (required within 90 days of hire, or when first class becomes available)
- Michigan Builders License preferred
POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:
- Satisfactory completion of background check and a pre-employment physical and drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act.
- All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
