DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
An employee in this classification performs engineering and field inspection work under the supervision of professional engineers. The work involves the application of engineering principles, methods and techniques in the preparation of civil engineering project reports and documents in an office, as well as inspection of construction projects related to sewers, water mains and paving projects for compliance with plans and specifications in the field. The office work is performed in a computer aided drafting and design (CADD) environment and involves the use of engineering and other related software. The field work involves the maintenance of records of material quantities and work progress for the timely preparation of contractor pay estimates.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs technical tasks, including calculations, to prepare engineering reports, drawings and specifications for the design and execution of civil engineering projects.
- Prepares and maintains on-going construction project records and post-construction record drawings and keeps records of quantities of materials received and/or used for the timely preparation of contractor pay estimates.
- Generates and summarizes field data used as a basis for initiating civil engineering projects.
- Inspects construction projects to ensure conformance with construction documents.
- Inspects and records materials delivered to the site and used for the project for compliance with specifications.
- Prepares sketches, monitors and inspects implementation of approved deviations from construction documents.
- Maintains daily logs of construction and inspection activities; monitors and prepares construction progress reports.
- Prepares post construction drawings from field sketches and records to reflect as-built conditions.
- Work as Rodman to assist survey team.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Working knowledge of basic engineering principles and their applications to civil engineering projects.
- Some knowledge of modern methods and techniques used in the construction and inspection of municipal infrastructure projects.
- Some knowledge of general construction methods and practices.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an Associate Degree in Construction or Civil Engineering Technology preferred. Some technical or inspection experience in a civil engineering office and field environment.
