JOB REQUIREMENTS: Examine and inspect aircraft components, includinglanding gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks,leaks, or other problems. Conduct routine and special inspections asrequired by regulations. Inspect completed work to certify thatmaintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.Read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and otherspecifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing orreplacing malfunctioning or damaged components. Maintain repair logs,documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance. Modifyaircraft structures, space vehicles, systems, or components, followingdrawings, schematics, charts, engineering orders, and technicalpublications. Inspect airframes for wear or other defects. Measure partsfor wear, using precision instruments. Obtain fuel and oil samples andcheck them for contamination. Maintain, repair, and rebuild aircraftstructures, functional components, and parts, such as wings andfuselage, rigging, hydraulic units, oxygen systems, fuel systems,electrical systems, gaskets, or seals. Replace or repair worn,defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testingequipment. Test operation of engines and other systems, using testequipment, such as ignition analyzers, compression checkers, distributortimers, or ammeters. Read and interpret pilots\' descriptions ofproblems to diagnose causes. Measure the tension of control cables.Spread plastic film over areas to be repaired to prevent damage tosurrounding areas. Remove or install aircraft engines, using hoists orforklift trucks. Assemble and install electrical, plumbing, mechanical,hydraulic, and structural components and accessories, using hand orpower tools. Locate and mark dimensions and reference lines on defectiveor replacement parts, using templates, scribes, compasses, and steelrules. Fabricate defective sections or parts, using metal fabricatingmachines, saws, brakes, shears, and grinders. Service and maintainaircraft and related apparatus by performing activities such as flushingcrankcases, cleaning screens, and or moving parts. Clean, refuel, andchange oil in line service aircraft. Trim and shape replacement bodysections to specified sizes and fits and secure sections in place, usingadhesives, hand tools, and power tools. Accompany aircraft on flights tomake in-flight adjustments and corrections. Remove or cut out defectiveparts or drill holes to gain access to internal defects or damage, usingdrills and punches. Install and align repaired or replacement parts forsubsequent riveting or welding, using clamps and wrenches. Inventory andrequisition or order supplies, parts, materials, and equipment. Prepareand paint aircraft surfaces. Remove, inspect, repair, and installin-flight refueling stores and external fuel tanks. Determine repairlimits for engine hot section parts. Clean engines, sediment bulk andscreens, and carburetors, adjusting carburetor float levels. Listen tooperating engines to detect and diagnose malfunctions, such as stickingor burned valves. Cure bonded structures, using portable or stationarycuring equipment. Disassemble engines and inspect parts, such as turbineblades or cylinders, for corrosion, wear, warping, cracks, and leaks,using precision measuring instruments, x-rays, and magnetic inspectionequipment. Check for corrosion, distortion, and invisible cracks in thefuselage, wings, and tail, using x-ray and magnetic inspectionequipment. Examine engines through specially designed openings whileworking from ladders or scaffolds, or use hoists or lifts to remove theentire engine from an aircraft. Communicate with other workers tocoordinate fitting and alignment of heavy parts, or to facilitateprocessing of repair parts. Clean, strip, prime, and sand structuralsurfaces and materials to prepare them for bo ding.
