Senior Project Designer - Piping/Mechanical

Position Purpose

T. Baker Smith is currently seeking a Senior Project Designer to join the team within our Engineering Discipline. The ideal candidate is responsible for leading a team of CAD technicians on a given project preparing comprehensive layouts and designs of onshore piping systems using advanced 2D and 3D modeling software. The candidate for this role may also serve as a Project Lead or Coordinator on select assignments, ensuring project alignment from concept to completion. This would include project team coordination, appropriate delegation, quality assurance/ quality control drafting review, and submitting deliverables within the allotted schedule and budget.

Essential Functions

Leads Technical Tasks on Projects

Review, analyze, and reduce raw data from field operations; process and analyze data (ie survey and laser scan data, hard copies of facility drawings, historical as-builts or design plans, etc.)

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior designers and technicians, fostering skill development and ensuring high-quality design deliverables.

Responsible for producing project deliverables to provide a comprehensive mechanical engineering/ piping plan set that adheres to project-specific and client-specific standards.

Execute plan production, ensuring alignment with project scope and technical requirements.

Ensure compliance with client specifications as well as industry codes and design standards.

Develops Project Deliverables

Develop solutions to modify specific project tasks to meet the scope of the project.

Prepare deliverables as directed by Project Manager and/or Project Engineer, in accordance with firm and client-specific project standards.

Responsible for producing project deliverables including site plans, overall layouts, detailed drawings, Isos, P&IDs, PFDs, 3D models, reports, etc. to deliver a comprehensive mechanical engineering/ piping plan set that adheres to project-specific and client-specific standards. This may include developing the deliverables oneself or delegating the work, providing guidance, performing QA/QC, and managing the schedule.

Collaborates with Project Team Members

Mentor and support junior technicians by providing technical guidance in piping and mechanical design practices, as well as providing training and assistance on industry-standard software applications.

Assist other project teams or departments with technical, field, or other duties as needed or requested.

Maintain effective communication with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure project alignment.

Take ownership of the deliverables and responsibility for the design and drafting team.

Task, quality, schedule, and budget adherence

Ensure quality control by adhering to company and client drafting and design standards.

Provide assistance in any area necessary to get the work completed according to the project schedule.

Stay current on techniques, procedures, industry regulations, and emerging technologies to enhance project outcomes

Participate in ongoing professional development and training to maintain technical proficiency.

Support project workflow to meet established schedules and deadlines.

Be conscientious of project schedule and budget, communicate the request for overtime or additional resources as soon as the need becomes apparent.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop man-hour estimates, budgets, and schedules for assigned design tasks.

Oversee project documentation and coordinate with project teams to resolve design challenges.

Conduct quality control checks on project deliverables to ensure design accuracy and adherence to specifications.

Collaborate with Project Manager to communicate project status, address technical concerns, and provide design updates.

Maintain design documentation, track project progress, and generate project status reports as required.

Take ownership of the deliverables and responsibility for the design and drafting team.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver and/or manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard, calculator, and telephone; talk and hear; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Desired Qualifications:

Associates degree from an accredited four-year college or from a vocational-technical college in a related field plus 15 years related work experience in the area of work specialization; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

A minimum of 15 years of specialized CAD experience in the piping and mechanical fields (includes AutoCAD, Plant 3D, CadWorx, NavisWorks, and other design software)

Ability to operate other necessary computer software and equipment, has a basic understanding of computer hardware and software.

Strong understanding of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), P&ID development, and equipment layout design.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is performing responsibilities in both a typical office environment and outdoor environment and is exposed to weather conditions. Associate could be required to ride in a boat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Associate does tour project sites periodically, and thus, is exposed to the noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors present at a project site. Nights away from home could be required.

Hours of Work

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, requiring 40+ hours per week. Nights and weekend commitments to the organization, its associates and clients may be necessary.
