About the Division of Design and Engineering\: The DCR’s Division of Design and Engineering program spans across many engineering disciplines from environmental engineering, renewable energies, facilities, construction, and transportation projects, water resources and dam safety, and electrical engineering. With the 3rd largest capital program budget in Massachusetts state government, our dynamic team engages in the adaptation of public lands and historic infrastructure to improve climate resiliency, supports critical infrastructure and public works, energy conservation, and stewardship of public works and resources.

Position Information\:
Contracted Student Internship\: Electrical Engineering
Location\: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA
Start/End Date\: 7/27/2025 - 12/13/2025
Salary Rate\: $24.00 per hour
Weekly Hours\: 37.5 hours
Number of Openings\: 1 position
Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.
The student intern will assist in various engineering projects aimed at preserving and enhancing our natural and built environments with DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering. These contracted positions offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in construction engineering, facility maintenance, project management, infrastructure management, and design within the realm of conservation.
Position summary\:
DCR has over 10,000 streetlights within its properties, illuminating pathways, parkways, and athletic fields. This position will assist DCR’s Electrical Engineering Section with creating and managing streetlight data by producing data points in a map to show location, picture images, and attributes for all DCR streetlights, updating web maps and web apps, opening & closing existing GIS Streetlights Data Gaps, identifying if a streetlight’s structure was updated, removed, abandoned, or ownership changed.
DCR’s Electrical Engineering Section manages all electrical systems and components from generators to lighting, transformers, high & low voltage systems. As part of the management of these systems we also do an update of documentation when upgrades occur with various components such as updating construction plans and Streetlights GIS system. In this section, the co-op would be taking on tasks of helping with updating construction plans and GIS Streetlight as well as other related duties.
Specific duties\:
- Working with and improving the streetlights data scheme.
- Determining streetlights data collection/update/maintenance workflow.
- Cleanup and QA/QC of existing and new data via fieldwork and office work.
- Fieldwork – mapping Data Gaps and updating Data Gaps that are out-of-date using GPS (ArcGIS Field Maps) for data collection and desktop data editing in ArcGIS Pro.
- Creating documentation for fieldwork techniques, editing techniques, and other workflows.
- Working with the Electrical Engineering Section to update GIS Streetlights.
- Maintaining GIS Streetlights data for use in web apps for staff and the public.
- Updating MassGIS's DCR streetlights layers.
- And other related duties as required such e.g. updating construction plans using ACAD.
Preferred Qualifications\:
- Strong GIS background in cartography and data editing
- GPS fieldwork experience and motivation to do intensive fieldwork.
- Strong written and oral communication skills for outreach to internal and external partners.
- Experience using AutoCAD
