Job Description
We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending homelessness and advocating for justice and dignity for vulnerable populations, including low-income renters, working families, people with disabilities, individuals experiencing homelessness, those living with chronic illnesses, and veterans. Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our Executive Team. This position will be responsible for overseeing the organizations financial health and guiding its fiscal strategy. The CFO will manage payroll, ensure compliance, lead budgeting and forecasting, mitigate financial risks, and coordinate audits. The CFO will also supervise and mentor accounting staff and work closely with senior leadership to support organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Planning and Reporting
Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organizations mission and objectives.
Prepare and manage comprehensive budgets at organizational and project levels.
Support the Finance Committee with calendar planning and fiduciary oversight.
Deliver accurate and timely financial reports, including quarterly financial statements, cash flow analyses, and budget vs. actual reports.
Provide financial training to management teams.
Monitor cash flow, investments, and ensure sufficient operational funding.
Accounting Governance and Compliance
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards.
Develop and maintain transparent financial policies and procedures to protect organizational assets.
Update accounting policies as needed, with required approvals.
External Relations
Manage relationships with auditors, financial institutions, investment managers, and funders.
Risk and Compliance Management
Identify financial risks and implement mitigation strategies, including payroll and legal compliance.
Maintain accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and relevant governmental standards.
Ensure compliance with funding requirements and timely preparation of invoices and government filings.
Audit Oversight
Oversee the annual independent audit and audits by funding entities.
Support the Audit Committee with scheduling and fiduciary responsibilities.
Payroll Administration
Manage payroll processing and ensure compliance with wage laws and agreements.
Track employee benefits eligibility and accruals.
Ensure timely payroll-related filings and deposits.
Client Trust Account Management
Maintain client trust accounts and manage related receipts and disbursements in compliance with regulatory standards.
Team Leadership
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including conducting evaluations and professional development.
Other Duties
Perform additional tasks as needed to support the organization.
Qualifications:
Commitment to the mission of ending homelessness and promoting justice and equity.
Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
CPA certification strongly preferred.
5-10 years of senior financial leadership experience in nonprofit organizations.
Experience developing investment strategies to support financial sustainability.
Proficiency with accounting software and deep knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
Strategic thinker with strong operational focus.
Reliable transportation is required.
