Position Overview

This position serves as a skilled carpenter for Logan Correctional Center. The individual in this role will perform journeyman level work in carpentry and construction. The ideal candidate will perform general carpenter work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures in a correctional facility. A background in working knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade would be a plus for our ideal candidate. Essential Functions

• Performs journeyman level work in carpentry and construction work.
• Performs general carpenter work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures.
• Instructs and supervises individuals in custody in the carpenter shop.
• Builds and erects wood scaffolding or forms needed for concrete construction projects and repair of existing structures.
• Perform incidental pattern making or cabinet work.
• Obtains job costs, estimates, and submits them to the institution's Stationary Engineer Chief.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
• Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience instructing beginners in the trade.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in directing unskilled workers.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the use and care of equipment used in carpentry.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the ability to read, interpret, and work from plans, simple drawings, or sketches.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in simple arithmetical computations and/or bulk estimates of materials needed.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
• Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
• This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
