UPMC Corporate is hiring a Project Engineer to join our team in Erie, PA! This role will work Monday through Friday during standard daylight hours. The position will require local travel to other sites as needed. In this role, you will assist in project management and construction supervision of assigned construction and maintenance projects, including both new construction and renovation, to achieve timely completion, within the established budget and at the highest level of quality possible. You will work under supervision of Construction Project Manager, Sr. Project Manager and Project Director for construction and maintenance projects from their inception through completion. As well as assisting in management of multiple projects concurrently, with the number of concurrent projects being a function of the size and complexity of each project.

Responsibilities:
Budget
- Review contractors pay applications and verify the monies requested are reflective of the work in place.
- Acquire User approval of this list and establish a budget for the items to be purchased utilizing input from the Purchasing Department and the project Interior Designer.
- Estimate the cost of construction and repair work on small projects. Monitor each project budget to assure that project costs do not exceed approved budgets.
Schedule
- Establish required-on-the-job delivery dates of all items to maintain the job progress per the construction schedule.
- Arrange contractors’ schedules to achieve sequential completion of project activities.
- Establish a general time model (schedule) indicating the duration of all major phases of the project.
Technology
- Computer aptitude necessary to operate standard office software applications and other standard office equipment.
Communication/Coordination
- Conduct job progress meetings or attend those conducted by the Construction Manager for the purpose of coordinating construction activities and reviewing construction problems and maintaining flow of information.
- Coordinates the activities of hospital contractors and contractor access to construction areas with applicable department heads.
- Obtain regulatory and building permits from municipality and other regulatory agencies before the start of work and obtain final approval of the completed facility prior to occupancy.
- Monitor the programming and schematic design activities being performed by the consultants and oversee their interaction with the Hospital Users to verify that the programming/design process is progressing in a timely fashion. Attend User Group meetings as necessary to monitor and control the project design.
- Coordination of the purchasing of furnishings and equipment.
- Ability to read and understand construction documents for the projects by reviewing the drawings, specifications, and other documents with the architects, engineers, and design consultants.
- Coordinate necessary shutdowns and other work items, which affect the existing facility with the Maintenance Departments.
- Verify that project documents are submitted by the design team to all necessary regulatory agencies (i.e. Department of Health, City of Pittsburgh, etc.)
- Arrange for asbestos abatement (as necessary) through the Hospital's designated abatement coordinator or contractor.
- Notify the appropriate design consultants in writing, of any problems or concerns, which are identified during this review process.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and cooperate with hospital staff members of all levels and positions.
- Evaluate each project's impact on the operation of the existing facility during its implementation and develop actions to minimize this impact.
- Develop a list of recommended contractors or review contractors recommended by the Construction Manager. Submit these recommendations for approval to the Director of Facilities and Construction.
- Seek input from members of the project team when necessary and keep team informed of decisions made which effect the finished project or function of the space.
- Also prepare project closeout report indicating all cost incurred in the performance of the work.
- Monitor the progress of design and construction activities to assure that projects are completed on time.
- Also obtain Department of Health (DOH) Life Safety approval of the plans prior to the start of work and DOH approval of the completed facility prior to occupancy.
- Evaluate each project's impact on the operation of the existing facility during its implementation.
- Assist in mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
- Upon completion of a project, coordinate the punch list issuance and follow up for its completion.
- Coordinate the preparation of a preliminary listing of all required furnishing and equipment items.
- Monitor the schematic design progress for adherence to this time model and report deviation to the Director of Facilities Management.
- Also, must be able to communicate with Architect, Engineers and a diverse list of vendors/contractors to facilitate the smooth and timely design, construction and occupancy on assigned projects.
- Monitor construction activity to ensure work is in compliance with the construction documents and is being performed at the highest level of quality.
