This position performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Essential Duties:The essential duties for a Transportation Engineer III, IV or V include:Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.Inspects structures for impact damage and construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures. Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges. Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer IV include:Coordinates and monitors consultant contracts related projects. Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges. Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards. Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer V include:Assists district with bridge inspection-related matters. Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance. Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designsPerforms inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure. Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications Estimates (PSE) submission, special specifications or special provisions.Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
