YOU

As the Mass Timber (MT) Engineer, you will contribute to the delivery of services that support the MT market segment by supporting the design of MT connectors and fasteners and the design of MT wood column anchorage to various foundation types. You will ensure services meet sales strategy through regular interaction with customers, service partners and sales teams, resolve non-conformance issues as well and collaborate with the MT development team on improvements to service-related applications.

WHAT YOULL BE DOING(% of Time)

Collaborate with the Mass Timber specifier community and provide cost effective design assist services for Connector and Fastener Designs used in Mass Timber projects. Perform calculations and provide recommendations based on plans and load requirements. Coordinate with the Project Management and international teams to secure specifications and provide technical assistance to internal and external customers. (70%)

Assist the Product Management team with engineering-related tasks and serve as a liaison between customers and product management to drive continuous standardization of common connection products based on service data. (20%)

Attend customer workshops and events to provide technical support to Mass Timber specifiers in attendance. Present at Mass Timber industry events and educate the design community on best practices in connector and fastener design. Regularly create Blog content on the industry and develop technical white papers to educate and support the specifier community. (10%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, youve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:

- Bachelors of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering from a four-year college or university required.

- Licensed Civil Engineer (P.E. and/or P.Eng) required.

- 1-2 years coursework and/or structural design experience on Mass Timber projects, including structural connection design for heavy timber applications. Experience with reinforced concrete and steel structures is also preferred.

- Knowledge: Practical working knowledge of common timber, concrete and steel construction methods, steel connection detailing including technical requirements for weld specifications and familiarity with Simpson products.

- Strong understanding of wood design codes and reference standards (ICC / NDS and CSA O86 for Canada).

- Reading

Comprehension/Speaking/Writing: Ability to read and interpret documents such as architectural and structural plans, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

- Reasoning: Effective analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables.

- Organization: Strong organizational skills. Ability to prioritize multiple projects.

- Team layer: Demonstrated ability to motivate and work with team members. Must be able to connect, interface, and communicate well with a variety of internal partners in sales, marketing, IT, quality, production, and engineering.

- Communication: Strong communication skills needed as clear communication is required to effectively deliver projects to customers as well as direct and train others.

- Software preferred: Frequently used software includes Microsoft Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access as well as other software including AutoCAD, SAP2000, Revit, Bluebeam, and Adobe Acrobat pdf viewers. Simpson Strong-Tie web apps are often used as tools for design. Basic programming knowledge in VBA (Excel and AutoCAD) or MATLAB is a plus.
