We are seeking an experienced Microtrench Operator to join our team in Sacramento, CA. In this role, you will be responsible for using specialized equipment to create narrow, shallow trenches for the installation of subsurface fiber optic cables. As an operator, you will use a microtrencher to cut the trench, often collecting debris with a vacuum hose to keep the work area clean. This method is less disruptive to the environment and public than traditional trenching.

The Role
- Operate and direct the use of microtrenching equipment, vac trucks, and associated tools in various soil and surface conditions
- Maintain the equipment and vehicles and lead the daily work plan, goals and requirements by active participation in pre-task and post-task team meetings, including reviews of safe work practices, work orders, job prints and job notes
- Operate heavy equipment and machinery while ensuring the safety of the crew
- Assist, enable and otherwise help complete job requirements, including, for example, assisting management, other equipment operators and/or the foreman with loading, unloading or positioning equipment, shoring or bracing, placing underground utilities, or placing or removing asphalt or concrete
- Identify and solve problems that may arise during the microtrenching process
- Lifting, carrying and holding materials, supplies, tools and equipment
- Perform quality checks on construction equipment and machinery
- All other duties as assigned by Microtrench Foreman
- 1+ years of experience operating microtrenching or similar utility installation equipment, including Ditch Witch and Vermeer saws
- Experience with microtrench depths up to 26 and widths of 2
- Proficient in backfill operations using materials such as CDF, pea gravel, Fastpatch, Sterling-Lloyd, and Mastic, with equipment including volumetric trucks, pumps, and Zahs with hoppers
- Familiarity with single and multi-duct microtrench installation methods as per customer design standards
- Strong understanding of microtrenching techniques, safety regulations, utility locating, and traffic control setups
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and apply safety, equipment, and process-related instructions
- Basic computer skills and functional reading/writing communication abilities
- Hands-on experience with vac trucks/trailers and excavation safety practices
- Physically able to perform duties including frequent standing, crouching, stooping, lifting up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 80 lbs occasionally
- Visual acuity required for equipment operation and job site navigation
- Able to work in all-weather outdoor conditions and around typical construction site hazards including proximity to heavy equipment, vehicles, and underground utilities
- Must provide a valid government-issued photo ID for verification; a drivers license is required if the role involves driving
- Passing of all pre-employment requirements (MVR, Background Check, Drug Screen)
