Project Manager-Facilities-Engineering (Team C)
The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.
Description
To lead the planning, design, and execution of moderately complex engineering and construction projects across campus facilities. To independently manage all project phases-from initial scoping and feasibility through design development, construction, and closeout. To coordinate internal and external engineering teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in alignment with institutional goals. For this position, most projects will be of an electrical nature, including power distribution and controls, but may also include other technical disciplines relating to construction and renovation of buildings as required.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manages moderately complex engineering and construction projects from inception through completion, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and standards. Oversees all aspects of project delivery, including planning, design coordination, budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. Independently leads project teams, consultants, and contractors, driving efficiency and ensuring milestones are achieved on time and within budget.
- Plays a central role in advancing strategic objectives such as cost control, client satisfaction, and the timely delivery of high-quality facilities that support institutional growth, research, and innovation.
- Supervises internal staff, including Project Administrator Engineers when assigned, and collaborates with cross-functional teams such as architects, engineers, designers, and construction personnel.
- Demonstrates effective leadership in guiding teams, managing conflicts, and sustaining project momentum while fostering a collaborative and accountable project environment.
- Engages regularly with clients and stakeholders, providing progress updates, managing expectations, addressing concerns, and ensuring overall satisfaction with project outcomes.
- Ensures full compliance with applicable codes, permits, environmental regulations, safety standards, and university policies throughout the project lifecycle. Contributes to problem-solving and informed decision-making within project teams by leveraging engineering expertise and strategic thinking.
- Anticipates and addresses moderately complex project challenges related to scope, budget, and schedule; develops proactive risk mitigation strategies to ensure successful outcomes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
STARTING ANNUAL RATE OF PAY: $70,000.00 - $105,000.00 (Commensurate with experience and qualifications).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, software) or related field, ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PREFERRED, and five (5) years of related experience. Professional Engineering License or ability to become licensed in Alabama preferred. PMP certification preferred. Work experience may NOT be substituted for education.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
Must maintain a valid driver's license issued in the United States. Motor Vehicle Record will be obtained and reviewed at least annually. Driving record should meet University underwriting standards to drive vehicle in performance of University business (MVR).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of project management principles and methodologies, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, procurement, and quality control.
- Solid understanding of engineering concepts across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.), as well as building systems, infrastructure, and construction methods.
- Familiarity with building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and permitting processes applicable to public or educational facilities.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage contractors and consultants, resolve conflicts and motivate team members to achieve project goals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with campus stakeholders, present project updates, manage expectations, and foster collaborative relationships.
- Strong analytical and decision-making abilities to anticipate challenges, assess risks, and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Ability to align projects with institutional goals and capital plans, demonstrating foresight in planning for long-term facility needs in an academic environment.
PERSONAL: Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position: sitting at computer for long periods of time, frequent traveling, prolonged standing, walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus, bending, climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, working in confined spaces and at heights above thirty (30) feet and working within extreme temperature ranges.
