Primary Purpose:

The Mechanic, under the direct supervision of the Shop Supervisor, maintains and repairs all District vehicles by following established procedures in order to maintain an effective and efficient fleet of vehicles. All Transportation Department employees must model the District's Core Values of Leadership, Commitment, Character, Learning, and Service.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver's License with a "P" and an "S" endorsement (or ability to do so within three months)
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug testing, a driver's license check and a criminal background check
  • Must pass a pre-employment and an annually renewed State required physical examination
  • Have a minimum of two years experience as a mechanic preferred
  • ASE Certification (Any "S" field) is preferred, but not required
  • Physical ability to function effectively and safely in a shop environment

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Perform daily preventive maintenance to include; tires, oil, fuel, all fluid levels, lubrication, points, plugs, hoses/belts, brakes, exhausts, lights, safety equipment, steering systems and any other checks established by policy and procedure.

  2. Repair all District vehicles; use diagnostic equipment (hardware/software), perform mechanical maintenance, and fix minor body work.

  3. Drive a school bus route as necessary.

  4. Respond to calls for assistance outside the Transportation Facility.

  5. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, bending, etc.

  6. Keep shop, equipment, and tools in a safe operating condition and correct/report unsafe conditions in the work area that are not correctable.

  7. Work irregular hours as needed and other duties as assigned.

  8. Assist other mechanics with repairs, work with driver's to maximize the use of District vehicles, respond positively to front office direction, and support the overall Team Transportation mission.

  9. Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.

  10. Participate in the Department's initiative for all employees to support one another as individuals and as TEAM members.

Equipment Used:

Automotive diagnostic equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air powered tools, torque wrench, jacks, lift equipment, MIG welder, Stick welder, gas torch, and A/C recycle machine as well as school buses and other District vehicles.

Occasional prolonged and irregular hours, work inside and outside with moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, exposure to vehicle fumes, and exposure to vehicles/machinery moving parts.
