JOB SUMMARY:
Surveyor Assistants working within the City of Birmingham are responsible for preparing for survey activities by ensuring work truck is properly stocked, assisting in locating boundary and utility lines, clearing obstructions, and ensuring the survey area is safe for all employees by monitoring potentially dangerous situations such as traffic flow on busy highways, heavy construction equipment that is in use, and other potential hazards while performing survey work. Incumbents assist the Survey Party Chief or Surveyor in planning, coordinating, and assisting in the operation of survey equipment to gather and record information needed to complete surveys. Work is performed under the direction of a Chief of Party or Surveyors and is reviewed for accuracy and completeness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver's License.
Experience with hand tools (e.g., hammer, bush axe, sledgehammer).
Experience with measurement tools (e.g., tape measure, ruler).
Willingness to work outdoors in extreme heat or cold.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Work experience as a surveyor assistant or similar position.
Willingness and ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds (e.g., manhole lids, bulky survey equipment).
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Assists Survey Party Chief or Surveyor in planning, coordinating, and participating in the survey process by providing general information about the survey projects to the general public and others, assisting in the operation of measurement devices, and assisting in training new personnel so survey staff are ready and survey projects can be completed.
- Prepares for surveying activities using established procedures and practices by ensuring work truck is stocked with necessary supplies, assisting in locating boundary lines, utility lines, and locating landmarks, clearing obstructions, and ensuring safety protocol is followed so that surveying work can be performed safely and efficiently.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of moderate physical activity such as walking on unstable ground for long distances, bending, twisting, climbing, crouching, crawling and exerting muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. The job may also require the ability to use one's hands and fingers to handle and manipulate small parts such of machinery or other equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites and frequently requires incumbents to work on uneven, cluttered and slippery surfaces and around moving vehicle hazards. Work may require exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, unpleasant smells, poisonous plants and dangerous animals, reptiles, or insects. Job may also require exposure to inclement weather (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind). Incumbents in this position are required to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety belts, glasses, gloves, or hard hats.
