Foreman, Operator/Inspector will train, direct and supervise bargaining unit employees engaged in the operation, troubleshooting and inspection of electric substation/distribution system facilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Has the authority to appraise performance, discipline, handle grievances and other managerial functions. Schedule, assign and coordinate the performing of switching operations on distribution, transmission/substation facilities; the troubleshooting/inspection of various electrical/substation and distribution equipment for defects and status of facilities; and location/isolation of electric substation/distribution system failures and referring to the appropriate personnel for repairs. Make work inspections to ensure an adequate quantity/quality of work is achieved; provide information and instructions to employees including keeping personnel informed of new equipment installed at substations.
Troubleshoot electric system equipment failures and report problems to appropriate department for correction; report defective equipment found during routine inspections to proper personnel; switch in substation as needed. Evaluate system outages and inform appropriate personnel of existing conditions for timely service restoration; coordinate planned equipment outages for routine
maintenance with industrial customers.
Develop/implement substation/distribution inspection operation standards/procedures and programs for substation/distribution equipment in order to detect defective equipment, reduce customer service interruptions and ensure proper repairs are made before system peak. Provide classroom instructions on MLGW's electric substation/distribution equipment, relaying and switching procedures to all personnel performing switching. Develop/implement MLGW's annual substation switching certification program for all personnel engaged in high voltage switching in electric substations; administer switching test to all job applicants. Prepare various paperwork such as time and mileage, requisitions, absence reports, etc.; responsible for service restoration. Responsible for the field system operation/ inspection area and the safe work practices of employees; conduct quarterly safety meetings. Operate Division vehicle/radio. Perform other duties as directed.
QualificationsLICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
A valid driver's license from state of residence is required.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) plus courses in Basic and Advanced Electricity is required.
EXPERIENCE
2 -4 years of experience in systems operation and/or test/maintenance of system equipment is required. Knowledge of protective relaying and electric safety manuals/operating codes is required.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must participate in Foreman Assessment Center within 3 months from date of hire. Must successfully complete NIMS Training within 1 year of entering job. Must be able to distinguish color. Must have occupationally significant combination of ability to apply procedures/regulations to coordinate specific
activities and ability to assume responsibilities involving a number of simultaneous activities. Physical Demands: Works outside majority of time.
Occasionally works inside. Works in proximity of energized electrical equipment and is subject to electrical shocks, burns, climbing, walking/standing for longs periods of time, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pulling, reaching and lifting during field inspections within electric substations. Subject to 24-hour call.
