The City of Appleton is currently accepting applications for a vacancy in the Water Division of Public Works. Applicants should have experience reading and maintenance of City water meters, as well as the installation and repair of City water mains and services. Work involves locating, installing, and repairing leaks in water mains and services, repairing, testing, and raising hydrants and inspecting and repairing valve and curb boxes. It also involves reading, installing, and testing meters, turning water on and off at selected sites, and replacing damaged meters. Hours are Monday Thursday 2:00PM 11:00PM, and 2:00PM 6:00PM Friday.

Essential Job Functions
Turns water on and off at designated sites.
Sets, tests and reads meters.
Installs remote meters.
Checks meters and wires for damage; repairs as needed.
Checks and replaces stalled and leaking meters.
Changes water meters, including large industrial meters, for testing.
Locates water and sewer mains and services.
Installs new mains and services.
Tests for and repairs leaks in services and mains.
Repairs, tests and raises water hydrants.
Inspects and repairs valve and curb boxes.
Operates various equipment, including a back hoe.
Performs maintenance and routine repairs to work related equipment.
Informs and advises home owners and businesses on breaks in a water main, service leaks and other concerns to them; takes and acts upon comments and complaints from the public.
Completes all necessary paperwork pertaining to work assignments.
Responds to calls and requests and takes appropriate corrective action.
Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works other shifts, overtime and extra hours as required.

Plows and hauls snow
Salts streets and sidewalks.
Performs any and all duties of Laborer and Operator I & IIRequires experience in the repair and installation of water mains and services and training beyond high school level in pipe laying and plumbing techniques or related field or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

Knowledge of pipe laying, plumbing techniques, and basic mechanical repair.
Knowledge of water systems, methods, codes and regulations.
Knowledge of types and uses of common hand tools.
Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision.
Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Ability to drive and operate a variety of vehicles including a back hoe.
Ability to lift and operate equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
Ability to read and understand street maps, plat maps, and directions.
Skill in the operation of computer equipment, including GIS and Microsoft applications.
Ability to decipher plat maps and execute correct measurements for accurate installations and record keeping.
Ability to withstand adverse weather conditions
Ability to fill out work orders quickly and neatly.
Skill in the operation of water test equipment and related tools and equipment.
Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.
Ability to obtain Wisconsin DNR D-1 certification within 12 months of hire.
Required to respond for emergency operations.
Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the N endorsement. Competencies
