Under the direction of the CESD Board, the Principal Superintendent will provide leadership in the following areas:
Education -The Canyon School curriculum emphasizes project based, inquiry learning, integration of visual and performing arts, and natural science.
Staff - Leadership should be by example and in a collaborative mode, with mutual respect and clear and positive communication.
Finance - Supporting the CBO, the Superintendent must be knowledgeable and conversant in all areas of the budget, maintaining solvency and guiding the CESD Board and the Education Foundation.
Facility - The Canyon School building is the home of our school and district office, and serves as the de facto community center for the town of Canyon. The grounds, a redwood grove on the banks of the Upper San Leandro Creek, are an ideal place for outdoor learning.
Communications - The Superintendent is the communications officer and is responsible for keeping the school community, residential community, CESD Board, and all relevant outside agencies informed on a timely basis.
Legal - The Superintendent, under guidance of the CESD Board, acts as liaison regarding all legal affairs of the District
This position is 100% FTE of 220 days.
Principal Duties
Supervise, hire, and schedule the three full time, experienced certificated teachers, classified instructional, and other staff. Supervision will include providing complete and timely written evaluations to the Superintendent and Board.
Work with the certificated teachers to evaluate and improve the curriculum, method of instruction, and implementation of multiple assessment strategies and act as State Testing Coordinator. Provide support for staff in the integration of the school's riparian campus, project based learning, the visual and performing arts, and environmental science with District curriculum. Facilitate and coordinate staff development.
Preside over weekly staff meetings. Ensure that staff agendas and meetings include observation and discussion of all students throughout the course of each academic year.
Advise, support staff, and document matters of classroom management and discipline. Use Restorative Justice to mediate student conflict and work with students to develop mindfulness and self discipline.
Maintain good communication and positive relations among staff, parents, students, and all the members of the Canyon School community.
Attend monthly Board meetings and present accurate and timely reports regarding the state of the school and recommendations for improvements.
Schedule and attend SELPA and IEP meetings as required to meet student needs. Coordinate services through SELPA and CCCOE.
Manage and Implement Safety Plan including planning and supervising mandatory fire and earthquake safety drills.
Provide guidance for staff with regard to budgetary requests.
Authorize the necessary arrangements for field trips and overnight camping trips at teacher's request.
Ensure that substitutes are provided when necessary so that the school will be fully staffed at all times.
Schedule and organize a School Site Council and provide for election of parent members every two years. Create and distribute annual school survey.
Writes LCAP with support from CBO and School Secretary.
Superintendent Duties
Ensure that all applicable laws, rules and regulations, including Education Codes and Frameworks, are followed.
Advise and update the Board of continuous development, evaluation and assessment of the District curriculum, including any necessary changes to the current curriculum. Facilitate curriculum adoption according to state guidelines and schedules.
Assist the Board by drafting new policies or policy changes, and making written recommendations for the Board's consideration on a variety of topics which affect the school.
Maintain School Board files and District policy manuals. Maintain complete copies of all State Curriculum and Frameworks, and Canyon District Curriculum Guides.
Attend all Board meetings and create the agendas with the Board President.
Provide written reports to the Board prior to meetings.
Meet with legal counsel on behalf of the District at the request of the Board.
Serve as Public Information Officer for the District
Coordinate and be knowledgeable about all repairs, maintenance and improvements to school facilities.
Work closely with CBO to ensure the legal expenditures of all funds are in accordance with the yearly adopted budget.
Attend county meetings and regional or state conferences as necessary.
Attend CCSolano, Keenan and CCCSIG as alternate.
