THE POSITION

The City of Santa Barbara is seeking motivated Water Distribution Operator Technician in Training (OIT) applicants looking to begin a career in Water Distribution with the Public Works Department.

  • Operational Excellence: Engage in a wide range of semi-skilled technical labor duties involved in operating, installing, repairing, and maintaining the city's water distribution system.
  • Complex Systems: Contribute to the operation, maintenance, and construction of a T5/D5 potable water distribution system and recycled water distribution system, including reservoirs, pump stations, pressure reducing stations, wells, SCADA systems, water mains, valves, fire hydrants, and associated equipment.
  • Quick Problem Solving: Use your troubleshooting skills to efficiently identify and correct issues within the water distribution systems, ensuring uninterrupted service.
  • Gain Skills in Operating Equipment: Operate an array of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, including dump trucks, skip loaders, boom apparatus, backhoes, service trucks, power and hand tools, analyzers, chemical dosing systems, which will develop your expertise.
  • Data Management: Maintain, compile, and update water distribution system operations data and reports. Perform routine calculations related to operational activities. Embrace the use of software and contribute to the development and use of new technologies.
  • Emergency Response: Make an impact when it matters most. Be prepared to respond to essential emergency duties during nights, holidays, and weekends, demonstrating your commitment to the community. Support other departments within our full-service City when needed. Earn overtime and standby pay that can also be used as compensatory time off (limited basis).   • System Repairs and Installations: Get hands-on experience in the installation of water and recycled water distribution systems. Be involved in cutting and repairing water mains and services, replacing valves and couplings, and assisting in the installation and replacement of water meters.
  • Technical Foundation: While prior experience is advantageous, our training program will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the water industry.

Because of the nature of the water system, much of the work is outdoors and involves moving around to different locations around the City.

This is the entry-level class in the Water Distribution Operator Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator Technician I/II by the performance of less complex operational duties, including performing more routine tasks and activities. Since this class is typically an entry-level class, employees may have only limited related work experience.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Water distribution experience is desirable.

Education and/or Training:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED is required.

License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license by time of appointment. Must be able to obtain a Commercial Class B driver's license within one (1) year of appointment.

Ability to obtain a State of California Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 certificate within one (1) year of appointment.
