About our opportunity: The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator III in the Public Works Department, specifically for the Concrete Utility Cut and Maintenance Division. This division is responsible for maintaining and improving the citys infrastructure to ensure safe and accessible roads and sidewalks for all residents and visitors. What youll be doing:
- Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms for digging, moving earth, grading, loading, and similar tasks for construction and maintenance projects.
- Operate excavator, track hoe, and backhoe for skilled digging and trenching while avoiding utility lines.
- Operate loaders to move materials, ensuring optimal delivery and weight management.
- Use motor-grader, scraper, and excavator with blade attachment to set gradients for construction and maintenance projects.
- Operate bulldozer, scraper, and compactor to move and smooth materials for construction projects.
- Drive tractor-trailer rigs and low boys to transport equipment to and from job sites.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for safe operation, perform light maintenance, and secure vehicles after use.
- Perform manual labor in support of projects, including lifting, moving, and unloading materials.
- Follow established safety procedures and use protective gear, monitor work environment for safety, and report incidents.
- Communicate with supervisors, employees, and the public to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.
- Process documentation associated with department operations and maintain records.

- High school diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in heavy equipment operation or a related field.
- Two years of experience in heavy equipment operation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s), and obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire.
- Must possess and maintain Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification.
- Ability to perform the essential functions and learn City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures.
- Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week; Mon - Thur position with some overtime/ night and weekend work required (Snow/ Ice, Emergencies, etc.).
